And now the road has to be changed towards a social Europe of peace and democracy
The victory of no to Constitutional Treaty in France is not a no to Europe.
The majority of French citizens who refused this Constitutional Treaty want a Europe based on strong and clear roots: social, civil and democratic rights, public services and common goods, refusal to war, active
participation.
"No" has been voted by the movements with which we built up -starting from the European Social Forum in Florence- the mass and participative space of social Europe, with which since long time ago we have chosen to build a
continental framework of commitment for a different world.
The vote in France must open the road to a deep and large debate between social and political European forces. It must open a serious debate between the left, socialist and socialdemocratic forces. It must open a big discussion in Italy.
A Constitutional Treaty arrived from above, based on the institutional mediation, full of liberism has been refused. It was the son of a Europe built on economy, finance, trade.
It was the son of a Europe born by closing the doors to the Southern society of the Mediterranean sea, by refusing migrants and asylum seekers, by using the Eastern Europe as a territory to be conquered, by rearmament.
It was the son of a European policy which privatizes public services and common goods, who considers work as an opportunity and not as a right, which is decided in closed rooms by Governments and burocracy.
The vote in France shows the mistakes of the process used to build the European unification. Now the space to imagine a European Constitution which can correct and change the process is open, toward a dramatical change of road towards a social Europe of peace and democracy.
We will do what we can, going on working for the alliance of everybody in our continent who say no to war, liberism, racism, who want to defend and improve the European social model, who want to build up a new politics based
on participation.
