"Fahrenheit 9/11" is een documentaire film die een kritische blik werpt op de aanslagen van 11 september en de oorlogen in Afghanistan en Irak. Moore kaart onder meer de zakelijke banden aan tussen de familie van George Bush en de familie van Osama bin Laden.

Michael Moore was duidelijk even van zijn stuk toen hij het podium betrad om de prijs in ontvangst te nemen. "Dat was een duidelijk verschil met zijn beruchte toespraak ("Shame on you, Mr Bush!") bij de Oscars in 2002, toen zijn film Bowling for Columbine de prijs voor beste documentaire won. "Ik ben compleet verrast", zei Moore ditmaal. "Merci." (Het Nieuwsblad online van 22.05.2004)

Moore hoopt dat de film ertoe zal bijdragen om president George W.Bush weg te stemmen uit het Witte Huis. Maar of de Amerikaanse kiezers wel de kans zullen krijgen om de film te zien, staat nog altijd niet vast. "Fahrenheit 9/11" heeft nog geen verdeler in de Verenigde Staten. De filmmaker zelf: "So what will happen to my movie? I still don't know. What I do know is that I will make sure all of you see it by hook or crook. We are Americans. There are a lot of screwed up things about us right now, but one thing that most of us have in common is that we don't like someone telling us we can't see something. We despise censors, and the worst censors are those who would dare to limit thoughts and ideas and silence dissent. THAT is un-American. If I have to travel across the country and show it in city parks (or, as one person offered yesterday, to show it on the side of his house for the neighborhood to see), that is what I will do." In ieder geval de moeite om hier bij ons de film te gaan zien. The Guardian stelt het zo: "The film, as it turned out, is Moore's strongest since Roger and Me, his debut documentary 15 years ago which examined the damage wrought by General Motors on his home town of Flint. Whereas the Oscar-winning Bowling for Columbine was hit-and-miss, self-contradictory, and more than a little sanctimonious, Fahrenheit 9/11 seldom loses sight of its target - the Bush administration - or its sense of humour." Een dikke proficiat voor Michael Moore!

"De korte tekenfilm "Flatlife" van de jonge Vlaamse filmmaker Jonas Geirnaert heeft een prijs van de jury gewonnen. Zijn filmp liep in de competitie voor de korte film.

In zijn dankwoord liet Geirnaert zich enigszins kritisch uit over het festival van Cannes. Volgens hem moet het festival meer het accent leggen op het artistieke, en iets minder op het zakelijke. De Belg maakte tevens van het forum gebruik om de Amerikaanse kiezer advies te geven. "Don't vote Bush", zo luidde zijn boodschap."
