There was a very interesting debate, that at times got a bit hectic. There was a very mixed public present at the forum. Some of the women said to be neither feminist nor activist and were just interested to learn what female media-activism is all about. Others call themselves non-political feminist with no inclination towards activism and a third group clearly stated to be activist.

The media-activist explained what media activism is in their eyes. Through several examples they explained it was a form of activism, used side by side with other forms of activism with the purpose of informing the public. They all agreed that media-activism is about providing information pure and simple and not counter-information. Media-activism is necessary because the mainstream media either distort or filter information. Another advantage of media-activism is that sometimes media-activists have a better access to information than journalists of the mainstream media have.

At a certain point there was a discussion between non-political feminists and activists (who do or do not call themselves feminist), where it became clear that women in activism are much more aware of the bigger picture of power and dominance (other than gender, also globalisation, racism,... ) and therefor are much less inclined to fall into the trap of using “masculineness” ways in dealing with each other. Female activists where shocked by the attitude of the non-political feminists that seem to accept and take over the hierarchical way of dealing with other people. Even if they are used to dealing with that type of behavior from men in the very masculine environments of technology and activism.

The activists agreed that it is important to network (even if the term itself is up for discussion) and meet face to face between women whenever the chance presents itself. Men have done this for ages and it comes natural to them but it is something women have to learn. We can learn from our experiences today but also from the experiences of women involved in activism in the past. The lack of links and networks sometimes makes women loose time and energy reinventing what has already been done in the past, and it would be a good thing if women could break with this habit before it becomes a female activist tradition.

Le débat était très intéressant, même si parfois c'était un peu intense. Le public du forum était très diversifié. Certaines femmes se disaient ni féministe, ni activiste et étaient là pour apprendre quelque chose sur le média-activisme féminin. D'autres se disaient féministes non-politique, pas intéressées par l' activisme et un troisième groupe se disait clairement activistes.

Les média-activistes ont expliquées se que le média-activisme représente pour elles. A l' aide de plusieurs exemples elles ont expliquées que c'est une forme d' activisme qui vas de paire avec d'autres types d' activisme et dont le but est d' informer le public. Tout le monde était d'accord que le média-activisme est là pour donner des informations pures et simples, pas de la contre-information. Le média-activisme est nécessaire parce que les médias traditionnelles ont tendance a difformer ou filtrer l' information. Un autre avantage du média-activisme est que parfois les média-activistes ont un meilleur accès aux informations que les journalistes des médias traditionnelles.

A un moment donné il y avait une discussion entre féministes non-politiques et activistes (se disant oui ou non féministes). Pendant cette discussion il était très clair que les activistes se rendent compte beaucoup mieux des structures de pouvoir et de dominance ( outre les relations entre sexes il y a mondialisation, racisme,...) et sont alors beaucoup moins inclinées de tomber dans le piège d' utiliser des façons « masculinisées » dans leurs rapports réciproques. Les activistes étaient choqués par l' attitude des féministes non-politisés qui semblent accepter et même copier les façons hiérarchiques de se comporter envers autrui. Même si elles ont l' habitude d' adresser se type de comportement dans les cercles très masculins de la technologie et l' activisme.

Les activistes trouvaient q' ils est important de se mettre en réseau (même si on n' est pas tout a fait d' accord sur le terme) et de se rencontrer face à face à toute occasion qui se présente. C'est une chose que les hommes font depuis des siècles, c'est comme si c'était une deuxième nature pour eux, mais pour les femmes c'est quelque chose q' elles doivent apprendre. Nous pouvons apprendre de nos expériences mutuelles mais aussi des expériences des femmes qui étaient engagé dans l' activisme dans le passé. Le manque de liens et de mise en réseau parfois fait perdre du temps et de l' énergie aux femmes qui pensent q' elles doivent tout inventer tandis que parfois ça a déjà été fait par d' autres femmes dans le passé. Ce serait bien si les femmes arrêtent cette habitude avant q' elle devient une tradition parmi les activistes féminins.

Het forum leidde tot een heel interessant debat, zelfs al werd het af en toe wat heftig. Er was een heel divers publiek aanwezig. Sommige vrouwen noemden zichzelf noch feministe, noch activiste, anderen noemden zichzelf niet-politieke feministes die weinig interesse hadden in activisme en een derde groep noemt zichzelf klaar en duidelijk activiste.

De media-activistes legden uit wat media-activisme voor hen betekent. Aan de hand van verschillende voorbeelden legden ze uit dat het een vorm van activisme is die hand in hand gaat met ander activisme en waarbij het doel bestaat uit het informeren van het publiek. Iedereen was het er over eens dat het doel van media-activisme puur en simpel informatie verstrekken is, geen contra-informatie. Media-activisme is nodig omdat de traditionele media de neiging hebben om informatie te vervormen of te filteren. Een ander voordeel van media-activisme is dat media-activisten soms een betere toegang hebben tot informatie dan journalisten uit de traditionele media.

Op een zeker ogenblik kwam het tot een discussie tussen niet-politieke feministes en activist es (die zich al dan niet feministe noemen). Tijdens deze discussie werd het al snel duidelijk dat activist zich veel beter en breder bewust zijn van machtsstructuren en mechanismen van dominantie (naast gender ook mondialisering, racisme...) en daardoor ook minder geneigd zijn in de val van het “masculinisme” te trappen bij interactie met elkaar. De activist es waren gechoqueerd door de attitude van bepaalde niet gepolitiseerde feministes, die blijkbaar een hiërarchische manier van met elkaar omgaan niet alleen accepteren maar ook zelf gebruiken in hun relatie tot anderen. Zelfs al zijn ze het gewoon om zich in de wel heel masculiene wereld van technologie en activisme te bewegen.

De activistes vinden het belangrijk om met elkaar te gaan netwerken (ook al is niet iedereen het eens over de term op zich) en elkaar te ontmoeten telkens wanneer de gelegenheid zich voordoet. Het is iets wat mannen al eeuwenlang doen en het is voor hen een tweede natuur geworden terwijl het iets is wat vrouwen nog moeten leren. We kunnen leren uit elkaars ervaringen, maar ook van de ervaringen van die vrouwen die in het verleden al bezig waren met activisme. Het gebrek aan banden en netwerken zorgt ervoor dat vrouwen vaak tijd en energie verliezen in het ontwikkelen van zaken die al in het verleden op poten gezet werden door anderen. Het zou geen slecht idee zijn als vrouwen met deze gewoonte breken voor ze een traditie wordt onder vrouwelijke activistes.
