In December 2003 the Board of the European Investment Bank (EIB) will decide whether to loan Euro 60 million for the Sepon Copper mine in Laos.

The highly controversial mine is currently extracting gold using cyanide and plans a massive expansion into copper. The mine is located in a biologically important region of rivers and rainforests. Waste from the mine threatens to destroy the local environment and people's livelihoods. Already villages have been relocated to make way for the mine and the sacred ancestral lands of Indigenous People have been destroyed.

The EIB will be breaking its own environmental policies if it goes ahead with this loan.

Your help is urgently needed to stop the EIB funding for the Sepon copper mine in Laos. Send your messages now to the president and board members of the EIB by clicking http://www.foei.org/cyberaction/laos.php

I support investement to this mine
by antoine Sunday November 30, 2003 at 08:01 PM

I support this investment in the mine because the only solution is to give Laos some more technologies to avoid this kind of pollution.

Laos is one of the poorest countries, there is a need of invesment to develop their country.

Laos has been bomb by chimical agents and bombs during the Vietnam wars. Thousands of people died.
The Lao people need our support, they need money. Thus, they need investments !
