U.S. Conservatives Take Aim at NGOs
by (posted by Guido) Wednesday June 18, 2003 at 04:07 PM

"While non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and Oxfam have made significant contributions to human rights, the environment, and development, they are using their growing prominence and power to pursue a "liberal" agenda at the international level that threatens U.S. sovereignty and free-market capitalism."

"That was the message delivered by a series of speakers at an all-day conference, "Nongovernmental Organizations: The Growing Power of an Unelected Few," Wednesday sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a Washington think tank that has been particularly influential with the Bush administration."

"To shed more light on NGOs, AEI announced the launch of a new website, NGOWatch.org (http://www.ngowatch.org), that will provide information about their operations, funding sources and political agendas. Brian Hook of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, which is co-sponsoring the site, said it will cover those NGOs "with the most influence in international affairs."

about the AEI
by Guido Wednesday June 18, 2003 at 04:09 PM

Outside the headquarters of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) about a dozen activists gathered to protest a forum being held by AEI, ironically called "We're Not from the Government, but We're Here to Help You: Nongovernmental Organizations: The Growing Power of an Unelected Few". The activists came from groups a part of the Shirts Off Our Backs coalition and two NGOs. None of their groups, or any other "liberal", "progressive" and "grassroots" had been invited to participate on panels during the forum.

Bush to NGOs: Watch your mouths
by Naomi Klein (posted by Guido) Saturday June 21, 2003 at 07:30 PM

"Before launching any new foreign adventures, the Bush gang has some homeland housekeeping to take care of: It is going to sweep up those pesky non-governmental organizations that are helping to turn world opinion against U.S. bombs and brands.

The war on NGOs is being fought on two clear fronts. One buys the silence and complicity of mainstream humanitarian and religious groups by offering lucrative reconstruction contracts. The other marginalizes and criminalizes more independent-minded NGOs by claiming that their work is a threat to democracy. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is in charge of handing out the carrots, while the American Enterprise Institute, the most powerful think tank in Washington, D.C., is wielding the sticks."
