"The French air force is trying out pilotless drone aircraft over Evian, the site of this weekend's G8 summit, as security builds up to an unprecedented level in the expectation that 200,000 or more campaigners against globalisation may try to disrupt it.

Cameras and electronic sensors in the drones will send information back to their base at Annecy airport, just south of Evian, where trial takeoffs, landings and airborne manoeuvres were practised early yesterday." Guardian

Veel uitleg is er niet aan.

Herinner u ook nog het onbemande vliegtuig dat in Yemen een aantal verdachten opblies met een raket:

"The unmanned Predator drone plane that fired the missile in Yemen had allegedly come from Djibouti, just across the Red Sea." Antiwar

Onbemande vliegtuigen werden ook gebruikt in Irak.

"Armed drones. The Pentagon is testing the idea of equipping unmanned Predator drones with Stinger heat-seeking missiles designed to enable them to defend themselves against Iraqi helicopters or fighter aircraft. As many as three of the slow-moving Predator surveillance drones have already been lost over Iraq, possibly to Iraqi anti-aircraft fire. Arming the planes with Stingers would allow them to fight back if attacked by Iraqi jets or helicopters. " Campustimes

Waarschijnlijk gaan ze ook in de States zelf gebruikt worden om de grenzen te bewaken.

"Unmanned aerial drones similar to ones used in the war on Iraq could be patrolling the U.S. border by the end of the year to help stem illegal immigration and increase security, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Thursday." Salon

Bv voor de grens met Mexico:

"Several Western congressmen have endorsed the use of the unmanned vehicles over the U.S.-Mexico border, including Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz" MSNCB

Ze zouden ook ingezet worden om het Congress in de gaten te houden:

"Ridge: Congress Will Be Run by Unmanned Drones (2003-05-23) -- Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge announced today that Congressional debates and votes will be conducted by unmanned drones by the end of 2005. The announcement comes a day after Mr. Ridge said drones will patrol U.S. borders to stem illegal immigration and increase security." scrappleface

Yep en dan te bedenken dat België net een paar van die vliegtuigjes heeft aangeschaft met de mooie naam B-Hunter. (afkomstig uit Israël trouwens, zouden beter daar tegen protesteren dan tegen Israëlisch fruit en groeten maar dit terzijde.)

Kunnen uren in de lucht blijven, worden nooit moe en hebben een pak elektronica aan boord om brave burgers te controleren. Worden ook gebruikt boven de Noordzee om olielozingen op te sporen.....

Als ik me niet vergis hebben de Fransen ongeveer dezelfde toestellen gekocht.
