Apen, beren, kamelen, vogels en paarden zijn door de plunderaars meegenomen of gewoon ontsnapt nadat hun kooien door de plunderaars werden geopend.

Meer dan 300 dieren worden vermist. Enkel de tijgers en de leeuwen zitten er nog, deze grote katachtigen waren hoogstwaarschijnlijk te aangstaanjagend voor de plunderaars.

"I am frightened to come here," zegt de veearts van de zoo Hashim Mohamed Hussein terwijl de kogels hem langs de oren suizen. "But I have to see my animals. They are hungry but we have no money to feed them."

Het is goed dat iemand de plunderingen in Bagdad aan de kaak stelt en tegelijkertijd de dierenrechten hoog in het vaandel draagt. Goed nieuws voor je in ieder geval: er zou voedsel gearriveerd zijn in Bagdad voor de dieren. “Food donated by the Kuwaiti Government has arrived in Baghdad for the starving animals at the city's wrecked zoo. A statement from the US Central Command said a two-week supply of fruit, vegetables and meat, as well as a one-month supply of dry feed, was delivered by convoy on Saturday.”

In het artikel dat jij citeert van Rosalind Russell is niet helemaal duidelijk over welke zoo er nu sprake is. "The bears have gone too, I don't know if they took them or just let them go," said Hussein, who said he was also concerned for the well-being of Uday's even bigger collection of lions and tigers at his Baghdad residence.”

Er zijn in Bagdad twee openbare zoo’s en (minstens) twee privé zoo’s. Een privé-collectie hoorde Saddam Hussein toe, de andere zijn zoon Uday. “At the rear of the complex, next to the harem, there were several of his possessions, understandably left untouched by the looters. Uday's private zoo included wild animals such as cheetahs, and a very sad looking lion peering out at us from behind the wire fencing. Several of Uday's prized stallions have, however, been hauled away by opportunistic looters. Beneath it all lies a cavern of car parks, packed with classic and vintage vehicles. Many are missing - jump-started and stolen before the US marines got here. Some of those vehicles will soon be seen on the streets of Baghdad. Driven away by looters, they will serve as a stark reminder of years of excess by the former first family.”

Ik ga niet verder in op de levenswandel van Uday Hussein – verkrachtingen, martelingen, alcoholmisbruik, hard druggebruik en verkoop, onthoofden van prostituees enz – dat zijn “details” waar alleen “losers” zoals ik wakker van liggen. Ik ga je ook niet onderhouden over het persoonlijk fortuin van vader Hussein – geschat op amper 24 miljard dollar – dat zou helemaal uit de bol gaan zijn. “Laat de rijken de crises betalen” zegden ze lang geleden. Toen de dieren nog spraken…
