Een groep vredesactivisten heeft aan de Belgisch-Duitse grens in het rangeerstation van Montzen gedurende enkele uren een Amerikaans militair transport voor de Antwerpse haven tegengehouden. Montzen is het rangeerstation waar alle goederentreinen uit Duitsland worden verwerkt. Ironisch genoeg werd deze spoorlijn door de Duitse bezetter aangelegd tijdens WO I, ter vervanging van de spoorlijn doorheen het toen neutrale Nederland.

De transporten van Amerikaans legermateriaal naar de Golf via België zijn sinds enkele dagen weer hervat. De 1st Armored Brigade, een in Duitsland gelegerde pantserdivisie, wordt naar Irak overgebracht om het grondleger te versterken voor een langdurige militaire bezetting van het land. De voorbije dagen zijn reeds enkele treinen en een hele reeks helikopters aangekomen in de Waaslandhaven. Vandaag wordt ook het Luxemburgse schip Catherine verwacht, dat reeds eerder Amerikaans militair materieel vervoerde. Opvallend is ook de aanwezigheid op kaai 1239 van de Zeemeeuw, de sleepboot van de Belgische zeemacht. Vermoedelijk ligt deze klaar om bij syndicale acties in te springen of blokkadepogingen te verhinderen.

Het Forum voor Vredesactie juicht dergelijke spontane daden van geweldloos verzet tegen de oorlog toe. België maakt zich medeplichtig aan de illegale oorlog en bezetting door de VS, door deze logistiek te ondersteunen. De verklaringen van premier Verhofstadt dat België in alle omstandigheden gebonden is aan zijn NAVO-verplichtingen zijn volledig fout. Geen enkel verdrag kan België dwingen medeplichtig te worden aan oorlogsvoering in strijd met het VN-Handvest. Dit blijkt trouwens duidelijk uit het NAVO-verdrag en uit de bilaterale overeenkomst uit 1971 zelf. Als de regering weigert het internationaal recht toe te passen, moeten burgers zelf zich tegen deze schendingen verzetten.

Men wil in de US de indruk scheppen dat de oorlog is afgelopen en gewonnen, maar de transporten bewijzen dat dit helemaal niet het geval is. De Bush administratie heeft plannen om een bloedige repressie te organiseren zodra de pers Irak heeft verlaten. Ze zullen zich bij hun plundertocht niet laten stoppen, door niemand. Het is erg dat ons land, onze regering daar aan meewerkt. Europa moet er dringend voor zorgen dat wij een militaire macht van betekenis worden, zodat er weer een machtsevenwicht ontstaat.

De oorlog in Irak is trouwens een oorlog tegen onder meer Europa. Het is uitermate dwaas dat Aznar, Blair en enkele dwaze nieuwe Europese staten tegen hun eigen winkel strijden. Europa moet eens leren de juiste analyse te maken en zich niet op sleeptouw laten nemen door de overigens vrij doorzichtige propaganda van de US. De US heeft het grootste arsenaal aan massa vernietigingswapens, heeft bij monde van Rumsfeld gezegd dat ze bereid zijn die te gebruiken, maar iedereen maakt zich druk over ingebeelde wapens die Saddam Hoessein zou gehad hebben.

Welnu, ieder soeverein land heeft het recht zich te verdedigen. Geen enkel land heeft de internationale rechtsorde zo overvloedig geschonden als de US. Waar haalt de US het recht vandaan Irak, Syrië en welk land ook ter wereld te beschuldigen van het hebben van massa vernietigingswapens. Waar haalt de Bush administratie het recht vandaan een ander land zijn recht op verdediging te ontzeggen. Het loopt uit de hand met de US adminstratie. Men weze gewaarschuwd.

Meer info over die divisie. Op de website staat er trouwens te lezen dat ze het bevel hebben gekregen om te vertrekken. Een divisie bestaat gemiddeld uit drie a vier brigades van telkens 4 a 5000 soldaten.

“Old Ironsides” moving out
1AD News Release

WIESBADEN, Germany – The 1st Armored Division, known as “Old Ironsides,” began moving out to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility Apr.16.

The 1st Armored Division received deployment orders March 4. The Division, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, is the U.S. Army’s premier armored division and consists of approximately 13,000 soldiers in Europe and 3,500 at Ft Riley, Kansas.

As of today, more than 3,500 vehicles and pieces of equipment, over half of the divisions total shipment, have been moved or are enroute to the seaport for deployment to South West Asia.

After weeks of preparation and maintenance, check and re-checks, vehicles and equipment are moving out from divisional units located in Hanau, Wiesbaden, Baumholder, Friedburg and other communities within western Germany. The movement began April 9 and will continue throughout April and early May.

Approximately 3,000 of the division’s 8,000 vehicles and aircraft – Abrams Main Battle Tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Combat Engineer Vehicles, Apache and Kiowa helicopters -- are moving out to ports this week. The remaining vehicles will head to the ports over the next few weeks.

About 1, 240 vehicles and pieces of equipment have been moved by barge and an additional 3,500 pieces were carried to the ports by commercial trucks. All of the division’s equipment is expected to arrive at dockside in two to three weeks.

Their NCOs checked the soldiers’ work and ensured that everything has been completed to standard. While these soldiers were focused on getting the job done quickly, the NCOs and officers continually stressed safety. As a result there have been no serious injuries or accidents reported during the deployment to date.

Spc. Brud Cronkrite of 1st Armored Division ground guides a M1A2 Abrams tank as it is loaded onto a train for transport. The Division is heading to the Gulf this week. Iron Soldiers are bringing a wide range of capabilities to the U.S. CENTCOM and V Corps commanders.

Once at the port, the vehicles and shipping containers will be loaded aboard cargo vessels. Once the loads are secure and inspected, the ships will travel to ports in the Persian Gulf region.

Approximately, 200 soldiers forming the division’s advance party from Germany and Fort Riley, Kan., will leave for Kuwait sometime next week. Their job will be to set the conditions for the division to rapidly download equipment and move combat ready into Iraq.

Iron Soldiers from the division will bring a wide range of capabilities to the U.S. CENTCOM and V Corps commanders. Not only is the unit fully capably of handling any direct combat operations but the officers and noncommissioned officers have extensive background with similar environments in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Most have at least one, and some multiple, deployments to Bosnia, Albania or Kosovo.

1st Armored Division is deploying from multiple locations throughout Germany. Soldiers have worked around the clock for the last several weeks to ensure their equipment is mission ready. The movement began in early April and will continue through early May.

The leaders and soldiers of the division are fully trained and confident that they have the skills necessary to confront any challenge that operations in the U.S. CENTCOM area may entail.

For the past six months the division has gone through rigorous combat-oriented training at both the Grafenwöhr and Hohenfels Training Areas. This has been tough and realistic training in which the soldiers of the division have excelled – the Division is fully prepared for a wide spectrum of military operations. With all of the units combat crews qualified, 1st Armored Division is ready for any mission.

For more than 60 years, the “Old Ironsides” division has answered the Nation’s call. From the sands of Africa to the Balkans, division soldiers have served their country as warriors and peacekeepers – showing the world they are well trained and ready to take on any mission they are given.
