Amman, Jordan — numerous demonstrations took place across Amman yesterday with thousands of protesting Jordanians calling for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. ---Some 10,000 residents also took part in a protest in the city of Maan after clerics across the town called on Muslims "to launch a jihad against Americans wherever they are" in their weekly sermons.-

Teheran, Iran - The first mass mobilization against the war took place today. Previous demonstrations were small. Around 60,000 people marched on the streets of Teheran. Speakers included high officials from all factions of the government.

Yemen, Egypt - Hundreds of women, some carrying placards declaring "the United States and Britain are the axis of evil," protested in San'a, Yemen. Elsewhere in the Arab world, 10,000 turned out at a rally organized by Egypt's ruling party in Port Said, and in Amman, Jordan, more than 3,000 people demanded that the kingdom expel U.S. troops

Turkish protestTurkish villagers showered U.S. soldiers with eggs and stones on Saturday when they arrived to recover pieces of a Tomahawk cruise missile which came down in eastern Turkey on Friday. Scores of people in Urfa province set upon four jeeps carrying some 10 American soldiers, breaking windows and shouting slogans against the U.S.-led war in neighbouring Iraq, Anatolian news agency reported. Turkish gendarmes later intervened to break up the demonstration. There were no initial reports of injuries.

Arab-Americans plan massive protest rally

SyriaThe demonstrators, mostly civil servants, students and members of Syria's Baath party-led ruling coalition, also carried portraits of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Iraqi counterpart Saddam Hussein. Syria, the only Arab member on the U.N. Security Council, has been a strong critic of the ongoing war. "The Iraqi cause is inseparable from the Palestinian cause," read banners carried by young protesters, in what was the first major demonstration held in Syria since the beginning of the U.S.-led war on Iraq. Anti-riot police posted around the U.S. embassy prevented the demonstrators from approaching the mission. Elsewhere in the Arab world, thousands of Libyans as well as other Arab and African nationals demonstrated in Tripoli, where they burnt effigies of war allies Bush and Blair.
