"25 March 2003 The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today warned of a humanitarian crisis in the Iraqi city of Basra, where coalition forces were involved in fierce fighting.

Asked whether coalition forces were looking after the needs of the Iraqi people, Annan said he had been told by the Red Cross that "the people in Basra may be facing a humanitarian disaster."

Power cuts have halted water supplies to large parts of the city, which is home to about a million people. Mr Annan said "urgent measures" needed to be taken to restore the supplies.

>>>"Currently estimating that 600,000 refugees and 2 million displaced residents will need assistance, the Federation and ICRC launched appeals on Thursday requesting a combined $160 million in financial support." Disasterrelief

Gaan we net zoals in Rwanda toekijken hoe een genocide gebeurd?

"HALABJA, Iraq (AFP) - The United States widened its war in Iraq (news - web sites) with a missile blitz of two Islamist groups in Iraqi Kurdistan killing at least 50 people but sending tensions in the area rising and raising questions over the validity of their targets." Yahoo news

"Marivan, IRNA -- At least sixty people were killed or injured in a Saturday US-led missile attack on the northern Kurdish city of Khaneqin, east of Sulaimaniya, local sources in this western Iranian border city said. The toll came as US forces fired more than 100 Tomahawk missiles into the stronghold of Ansar al-Islam, a shadowy group with alleged links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network." Irna

"-- US and American troops on Sunday used depleted uranium during their shelling of Basra in southern Iraq, news resources inside Iraq told IRNA. They used the weapons to destroy Russian-made T-72 tanks, they said, adding heavy clashes were going on among ground forces of the warring sides at 14:00 Tehran time (9:30 GMT). "Irna

"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - When Shafa Hussein returned from taking her sick son to a Baghdad hospital, she found her home in ruins, destroyed in U.S.-British air strikes. "This is real terrorism. Innocent people are sitting in their homes and bombs fall on their heads. I ask America, isn't this terrorism?" said Hulayel al-Jekhafi, whose house was damaged in the attack on the Qadissiya neighborhood." Reuters

"Visibly the bombing during the night was quite violent. We have also heard there are many victims but we cannot confirm a figure," Doumani said. Most of the relief agency's staff in Basra are engineers dealing with water supply and the agency, which works with the local Red Crescent, said it did not have expatriate medical personnel there to check on conditions at local hospitals. "We do not have access. Our employees appear to have trouble moving around Basra itself. That is not a good sign," Doumani added." Common Dreams

"Komala's military garrison was also hit, killing Mr Saeed and at least 33 other people. As volunteers pulled corpses and body parts from the smouldering ruins of the compound, Mr Saeed's widow Aisha and 10 children wanted to know only one thing: why had America killed him? "There is no excuse for doing this," said his nephew, Mr Mohammed. "We were happy when the US promised to get rid of Saddam Hussein and his regime. But this is replacing Saddam with another form of tyranny. We are extremely angry.""Kansascity
