1) Manu Claeys: "A Borgerhout, l'affaire Abou Jahjah a brisé des tabous"

L'essay 'Het Vlaams Blok in ieder van ons" ("Le Vlaams Blok en chacun de nous") a été traduit en français (éditions Luc Pire, 19 Euro) et pour Le Soir (15/02) Bénédicte Vaes a fait un interview avec l'auteur Manu Claeys qui vit depuis 13 ans à Borgerhout, avec sa famille.

Vaes lui demandait: "Les bagarres qui ont suivie le meutre d'un professeur de réligion islamique et l'apparition d'Abou Jahjah ont-elles profité au Blok ?"

Claeys: "Ces épisodes très médiatisés ont braqué le projecteur sur des problems réels: écoles ghettos, chômage, discriminations dans le logement. Des tabous se sont brisés dès le moment où Abou Jahjah est devenu le porte-parole d'une jeunesse d'origine immigrée qui se radicalise, prenant une posture de confrontation. Sous le choc d'Abou Jahjah, les débats politiques et les tribunes de journaux se sont ouverts aux représantants moins radicaux de la communauté marocaine. Ceux-ci nt eux-mêmes ouvert le débat sur les droits et les devoirs de citoyens. Le Blok a moins pesé sur le discours politique. L'on a commencé à s'attaquer, sur le terrain, aux discriminations. Parfois, on a besoin de radicaux pour nuancer le débat."

2) "Diamonds are a socialist's best friend"

Als we Manu Claeys bovenvermelde redenering volgen, zal AEL niet de opkomst van het Blok in de hand werken maar het omgekeerde. Dat één van de grootste tegenstanders van AEL, de SPA, daar niet in slaagt bleek onlangs weer bij de voorstelling van de licentieverhandeling van Jeroen Adam (RUG). Die toonde aan dat "het Vlaams Blok de arbeiderspartij bij uitstek is". "De partij van de kleine man. Zowel de kandidaten als het electoraat komen uit de laagste sociale klassen" noteerde Bart Brinckman in De Standaard (10/02).

Ondertussen slaagt de SPA-top er soms wonderwel in om haar arbeiders-karakter volledig af te gooien. Walter Pauli had het daar in De Morgen van 22/02 over. Hij noemde de kandidatuur van SPA- voorzitter Janssens voor een zitje in de 'Hoge Raad van de Diamant' "wellicht moderne sociaal- democratie". Waarna hij vernietigend uithaalde - nu dat deed Pauli ook met Abou Jahjah - vingers kruisen ... - naar Janssens aan wie hij vroeg of hij dan niets van 'Agusta' geleerd heeft. Volgens Pauli is het Janssens om wat Joodse stemmen te doen, maar de manier waarop hij die wil binnenhalen, kan volgens Pauli niet. Pauli: "Ofwel heeft de man dus weinig politiek doorzicht, ofwel gaat hij figuurlijk over lijken voor een paar stemmen meer. In dat geval spreken we het best van bloedstemmen."

Patrick Janssens has studied Political and Social Science at the University of Antwerp, UIA, and Applied Economic Science, at UFSIA, the University of Antwerp (Belgium).
