De vredesbeweging is verdeeld. Aan de ene kant is er een militante groep met een grote mobilisatiekracht die bijvoorbeeld in het weekend van 18 en 19 januari instond voor krachtige signalen tegen de oorlog in Irak. Aan de andere kant is er een coalitie van tientallen organisaties waarvan de grootste gemene deler lijkt te zijn dat ze liever niet met de eerste groep willen samenwerken. Toch krijgt de eerste groep verwijten over zich heen dat zij de sectairen zijn en zorgen voor verdeeldheid in het "linkse" kamp. We hebben het niet over België maar over de Verenigde Staten en alle gelijkenissen berusten louter op toeval. Of toch niet?

ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) was een van de eerste anti-oorlogscoalities die in de VS opgericht werden in de nasleep van de gebeurtenissen op 9/11/01. Het initiatief kwam van het International Action Center, een organisatie onder leiding van Ramsey Clark, die al sinds de eerste golfoorlog een massabeweging op gang brengt tegen de imperialistische oorlog.

ANSWER was sindsdien verantwoordelijk voor enkele zeer geslaagde massa-acties. Daarbij brachten ze niet enkel veel volk op de been zowel op de West- (SF, LA) als op de Oostkust (Washington, NY). Ze slaagden er ook in om de steun aan de strijd van de Palestijnen te verbinden met de strijd tegen de oorlog in Afghanistan en Irak.

Het succes van ANSWER is een deel van de ‘linkse' vredesbeweging blijkbaar in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten. Vooral de libertaire intellectuelen nemen al geruime tijd ANSWER op de korrel in artikels en websites. Als voorbeeld nemen we Michael Albert, de editor van de zeer interessante en invloedrijke website Znet omdat zijn aanvallen een ruime verspreiding kenden en alle andere aanvallen voortborduren op de thema's die Albert ook aanhaalt. Net voor de betoging op 26 oktober 2002 bijvoorbeeld liet Michael Albert een waarschuwing circuleren via e-mail.

Albert moet erkennen: "One extremely energetic antiwar group is the International Action Center (IAC). It is the leading force in the coalition ANSWER (…)" Hij stampt echter meteen ook een open deur in door eraan toe te voegen: "IAC is officially led by Ramsey Clark and is largely the creation of the Workers World Party; and many key IAC figures are prominent writers for WWP." Albert's grondige screening van de IAC website levert zelfs de volgende onthutsende vaststelling op: "In none of IAC's considerable resources on the current Iraq crisis is there a single negative word about Saddam Hussein." En IAC sprekers op betoging zijn doorgaans "not offensive so much for what they say, but for what they don't say. That is, they won't praise Saddam Hussein from the podium, but nor will they utter a critical word about him." U begrijpt dat zulks te ver gaat voor een weldenkend intellectueel als Albert. Volgens hem is een anti-oorlogsbeweging die niet zowel Bush als Saddam aanvalt "of necessity limited in size."

Am zeker te zijn dat hij genoeg achterdocht kan opwekken bij de naieve lezers, doet libertaire Albert ook nog kond van zijn rijke ervaring. "The day-to-day practice of (an) IAC cadre often shows a lack of commitment to democratic and open behavior," weet hij. We willen het natuurlijk graag geloven van iemand die in de voorgaande redeneringen toch wel blijk geeft van enige expertise wat "open behavior" betreft. Tot spijt van wie het benijdt moest hij echter wel vaststellen dat de ANSWER demonstraties van 26/10 "the only show in town" is en aangezien "most of the people at the demonstration will in fact be unaware of exactly who said what and whether any particular speaker omitted this or that point," kon het volgens Albert ook niet echt kwaad om deel te nemen. Als de deelnemers tenminste niet vergaten om ook hun "extreme distaste for the IAC" kenbaar te maken. "Lack of commitment to democratic and open behavior" weet je wel?

Kort na de succesvolle betogingen van 26 oktober sloegen de verschillende andere groeperingen in de anti-oorlogsbeweging erin om een coalitie te vormen onder de naam "United for Peace". Het spreekt natuurlijk vanzelf dat ANSWER noch IAC daarin vertegenwoordigd zijn. Maar in het actieweekend van 18 en 19 januari was het weer ANSWER die het initiatief nam.

In de aanloop van de acties van vorige week verscheen geen oproep voor de betogingen op de website van Znet maar wel een link "ANSWER?". Deze link brengt je niet naar de campagnesite internationalanswer.org maar naar de site http://authoritarianopportunistswhocozyuptogenocidaldictators-forpeace.org. Hebt u ‘m?

Deze site, zogezegd van "Radicals Eager to See Peace on Earth – Not Sectarian" (RESPONSE, inderdaad how low can you go?), riep op om naar de betoging van 18 januari te gaan maar niet zonder eerst kennis te nemen van het feit dat ANSWER een groep is die "genocidal dictators" steunt. Als bewijs daarvan voorziet deze pagina in een aantal links naar artikels op de website van de Workers World Party (http://www.workers.org).

Wie het waarschuwende vingertje van de libertaire, doch weinig subtiele hooggeleerden volgt kan zo bijvoorbeeld kennis nemen van een artikel dat de medialeugens over Tienanmen 1989 ontkracht; artikels die verslag brengen van steunmobilisaties van Noord-Koreanen en Irakezen voor de leiders van hun land; en artikels die getuigen van solidariteit met Milosevic nu hij berecht wordt door zijn vroegere aanvallers. Kortom, genoeg materiaal voor salon.com-progressieven om een "extreme distaste" voor de organisatoren te ontwikkelen alvorens met tegenzin aan hun demonstratie deel te nemen.

Gelukkig dat er nog niet-sectaire "radicals" zijn om ons te waarschuwen voor de autoritaire opportunisten. Maar hoe het de vredesbeweging vooruit helpt is me vooralsnog onduidelijk. StopUSA is in elk geval gewaarschuwd voor wat het nog kan verwachten.

Postscript: Vele van die schotschriften over ANSWER zijn overigens wel grappig. Zo moeten onze niet-sectaire radicalen met enige wrevel vaststellen dat zowel ANSWER als IAC verstandig genoeg zijn om niet op de laag-bij-de-grondse provocaties in te gaan. "No, of course no," zegt infoshop.organization verduidelijkend, "These are authoritarians that we are talking about. They aren't interested in democracy and discussion." Een knap staaltje van logica voorwaar!

De hetse van zogezegd linkse activisten tegen STOPUSA is inderdaad zeer gelijkend op die tegen ANSWER.
Ook wat ge zegt over geenoorlog, als grootste gemene deler niet willen samenwerken met die van STOPUSA, is zeer just en zal ik ook gebruiken.

Schitterende analyse, Edwin. Maar het is nog niet gedaan. Onafgezien van het feit dat ANSWER op een echte anti-oorlogsbasis werkt, en het grootste deel van de VS-vredesbeweging kan verenigen, is er een andere tweespalt, die veel gelijkenissen vertoont met de initiële 2-platformen-discussie bij ons in België. Ik kopieer hieronder enkele zeer verhelderende mailings en artikels die ik heb gevoerd met het International Action Center, met wie STOPUSA en SOS IRAK samenwerkt, en met Ramsey Clark werken we al samen sedert 1991 over MoveOn. MoveOn startte initieel als een steunorgaan voor Clinton na de Lewinsky affaire. (We moeten niet bij de pijp-affaire blijven stilstaan. let's MoveOn). Nu storten ze zich op de anti-oorlogsbeweging als alternatief van de VS-democraten. Zij werken samen met het anti-oorlogsplatform:

Ik wil echt geen tweespalt veroorzaken, maar vermits in deze posting de aanval op ANSWER wordt beschreven, wil ik het plaatje vervolledigen. Dit is interessant om de vergelijkingen te maken met wat er ook in België en andere landen gebeurt.

Our experience with MoveOn was after the announcement of this summer's hearings in the US Congress on the Bush strategy for "regime change." This Congressional "debate" was initially posed as THE forum that would challenge the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq. MoveOn proposed a massive campaign to visit congressional representatives to address the issue of Iraq. It received a broad response. Here in Philadelphia a local activist volunteered to help organize a contingent to Pennsylvania senator Arlen Spector (Republican).

He sent us MoveOn's call organizing people to demand 'Don't Invade Iraq' and invited us to be part of the delegation. We responded that we would like to raise the issue of the war on Iraq with the senator, but this would involve addressing issues far beyond the pro's and con's of the Bush administration's invasion strategy. It involved the question of the sanctions on Iraq, and the continuing bombing campaign on Iraq. He responded that this sounded good, but would check with the national organizers.

For the record, here is the appropriate excerpt from the head of MoveOn recommending that Campaign to End the Sanctions be excluded from the delegation:

The organizer was so demoralized by this sectarian perspective that excluded opponents of sanctions, that he resigned from the MoveOn venture. By limiting the discussion on Iraq to the debate on the invasion strategy of the Bush administration the MoveOn group deliberately and effectively excluded views of opponents of the sanctions and the ongoing war. They attempted to limit views opposing the Bush plan on Iraq to those who advocating continuing the containment policy of the US against Iraq. ie the position of the Democratic Party.

Protests Held Across the Country to Oppose War in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 - From a morning blockade of a federal building in Chicago to a lunchtime march to the White House to an evening discussion at a Y.W.C.A. in Detroit, a cross-section of activists, celebrities and everyday Americans held more than 150 events across the country today to oppose a war with Iraq.

Organized by a coalition of more than 70 groups called United for Peace, the events ranged in attendance from several dozen at Youngstown, Ohio, and Mineola, N.Y., to several hundred in Santa Fe, N.M., and Oakland, Calif.

Organizers and participants said the diverse turnout represented a growing wave of popular dissent, even as the country inches closer to military action.

The scattered displays of dissent did not compare to the large turnout at a national protest held in Washington in late October, which attracted more than 100,000 people from around the nation.

But organizers said size was not their intent this time. Instead, by fanning out to small towns, neighbourhood squares and workday traffic areas, they said they hoped to emphasize a growing wave of scepticism and dissent to war.

"We want you to hear us, Mr. President," Damu Smith, director of Black Voices for Peace, one of the coordinating groups, said as he stood with a midday crowd of several hundred in Washington. "We hope you hear our voices today."

The hundreds of speeches given nationwide included tributes to Philip F. Berrigan, a former Roman Catholic priest and anti-Vietnam war organizer who died last week, and salutes to President Jimmy Carter, who was being presented the Nobel Peace Prize as some of the events took place.

The day of protests, Mr. Smith said, represent a new phase in coalition building around the anti-war movement, and several more events are scheduled in the weeks and months ahead.

In Los Angeles, a group of celebrities including the actors Martin Sheen, Hector Elizondo and Tony Shalhoub turned out to add high-profile support to the movement. More than 100 entertainers have signed a letter to President Bush appealing for a diplomatic rather than a
military response in Iraq.

"It's time to stand up and declare ourselves as patriots concerned for our country," Mr. Elizondo said.

The celebrity group is part of a larger coalition called Win Without War that will officially begin on Wednesday. Backed by national religious and civic organizations, including the National Council of Churches, the N.A.A.C.P., the National Organization for Women and the Sierra Club, organizers said the group's purpose was to emphasize what they called a mainstreaming of the antiwar movement.

"We are patriotic Americans who share President Bush's belief that Saddam Hussein's Iraq cannot be allowed to acquire weapons of mass destruction," reads the coalition's political mission statement. "We part ways with the president, however, on the issue of pre-emptive military attack against Iraq."

One of the founding organizations, MoveOn.Org., started an online signature campaign a week ago titled, "Let the Inspections Work." Within days, it gathered more than 175,000 signatures and over $300,000 in donations to buy antiwar advertisements in national media outlets.

"There is significant energy building out there," said Eli Pariser, the internet-based group's international campaign director.

The events today varied widely in tone and turnout. In New York, the police arrested 99 clergy members from a variety of faiths on charges of blocking the doors to the United Nations mission.
