proficiat by peter Tuesday January 21, 2003 at 12:23 PM |
Ik zeg mijn abonnement op de morgen op en neem er eentje op indymedia. Proficiat aan de ploeg die in zo'n korte tijd zo'n indrukwekkend verslag in elkaar kan boksen. Indymedia.be wordt steeds beter. Doe zo verder. Ik kom zeker naar de volgende betoging. 15 februari. I'll be there.
indymedia or cnn? by johannes Saturday January 25, 2003 at 06:21 PM |
proficiat my ass -
indy media has become a puber zine by adopting the same stance as mass media even if realized via an 'alternative rhetoric.' - pics, legal teams, vids, this is all excellent, really, but nevertheless it is sad to see such populistic commentary and 'pass the blame' attitude in indymedia. 'be the media' or be another form offering over simplified propaganda that takes the 'real' issues on vacation while substituting goats (or bushes in this case) that we can easily heckle, hollar at and throw stones too. bush and the american government are behaving horribly and there is a good indication as to why, but protesting 'america' is too little too late - the 'america' you hollar against is bred in belgium, france, the netherlands, and on and on, not only bred, but nurtured and spreading like any other virus.
i recently saw a 'print campaign' of indymedia lying in a cafe - though i agree with much of what was printed in it, i found it to be worthless on an intellectual or aesthetic (perceptive level), because it reflected a monotonous opinion and failed to consider ethics, truth or other important political controversies taking place in the black box of negotiation. is this strategy helping things? is it changing the current 'state of exception' or creating the panic provided by 'state of emergency,' which is no longer the political scenario?
the senseless (and ongoing as opposed to about to begin) war in iraq must be stopped, but i am afraid that indymedia belgium has become the old model of liberals who become conservative and do so much to protect their stale position that their behavior and strategy mimics that of those they cry out against. 'be' -ing the media doesn't just mean painting a different picture. if there is a problem with popular media it is that it caters to the lowest common denominator and over simplifies - isn't that just what's going on here? how bout instead of sloppy newsletters that don't lead to actual links, and loads of protest pics (which are great to see by the way, especially after you've been standing there yourself) wouldn't some bold, well thought, no nonsense commentary be a more effective measure for a thinking audience to enhance itself?
maybe for this critique to be more effective, i should have thought it out and structured it instead of adhering to some sort of 'action writing,' but indymedia belgium has become the crusty hippy and is in dire need of some new structure (meanwhile they apparently, according to a few sources, don't even answer the mails of the new 'volunteers' they solicit in all their communications), which makes this mail and emotional, contrary to strategic, one. Perhaps this is because its leaders, hmmm, hierarchy in indymedia???, are too busy putting themselves on party platforms for coming elections - one would think that a decision like this would mean stepping out of rhizomatic media, oh yeah, but then again, like i said, indy media belgium doesn't reflect the rhizome, but rather that old boys, elm tree, hierarchical root of the same structures that are engaging in war to nurture their offspring in oil.
all that said- indymedia is important to me, to multiplicity and to providing a 'third' narrative - my question isn't about their noble intention, but isn't it time somebody took a look in the mirror and thought about the use of their actions and how they've become just like those they detest?

* NOT CLEAR *
Sorry, i'm not sure about what you really want ... this sounds really abstract to me.
Perhaps you could explain it a bit more concretely, with examples, what you like, what you don't like ...
* VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOME *
Anyway, you are totally welcome to collaborate and bring your own input. You mention a volunteer mail that wouldn't have been answer. I cannot answer like that 'in abstracto' what happened with it, but if you or anyone want to participate, every volunteer is welcome.
=> Contact me personnaly and we'll fix that.
* INDY(MASS)MEDIA *
For the rest, i don't take the term 'mass media' as negative at all. Yes, we want to be a mass media! We don't want to be any kind of happy-few fanzine. But we want to be a resistance mass-media, anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist. Our collective action for information, mobilisation and debate can only be efficient if we reach a really broad range of the population.

HELP by Heidi Moore Sunday January 26, 2003 at 07:50 AM |

Hello, I am commenting from Portland, ORegon USA. We had twenty five thousand marching on the 18th of January. But we have millions marching all accross America. It is not enough. We need you, in Europe, to send the United Nations to inspect the weapons here in the U.S. can you please put pressure on your country leaders, to realize that we Americans havn't enough power to stop George Bush. We need your help. They are detaining Middle Eastern men all over the country, and we can not stop them. In this case, you must help us to help ourselves get rid of this dictator who has stepped on the heads of our people, and become the bastard child of the Supreme Court. Thanks- Heidi
