General information about the AEL

The Association Electronique Libre (AEL) was created to defend our fundamental rights in the information society.

Cyberspace (the information society) is a wonderful place where freedom, democracy and ethics are available without boundaries. But there are of lot dangers and forces that want to limit this freedom.

The Association Electronique Libre (AEL) wants to protect fundamental rights by promoting the following concepts in our society :

* Free Software (use and development) (for more information : http://www.fsf.org)
* Freedom of speech, press and association in the electronic society
* Privacy
* Anonymity
* Open standards in the electronic society

AEL actions to protect these important concepts are :

- AEL activists are available to deliver speeches at local entities (like other civic associations, computer associations, universities, ...) in Belgium and other countries. This helps to promote the concepts to more people and to hear more ideas and topics for the association. (feel free to contact us)

- AEL is providing support and help for promoting the general concepts behind cyberspace. (from Free Software to Freedom in the information society)

- AEL is monitoring legislation actions affecting the information society. (for example : EUCD, DMCA, privacy laws...)

- AEL supports innovation and state-of-the art technologies that promote Freedom and privacy in the electronic world. (for example : The use of cryptography, the awareness of computer security...)

- AEL is joining other associations that promote freedom in the information society.

See the current actions for more information.

How to help ?

- Join the current mailing-list of the AEL.
- Become an activist.
- Sponsoring. (feel free to contact us)

As an 'illustration', here is one interesting article you can find on the AEL-site.

** "Belgian Minister of Defence wants to spy everyone in Belgium and outside"

Submitted by Vincent Jamart on September 03, 2002 - 14:48

As explained on http://www.lesoir.be/articles/a_02DB89.asp and in the "De Morgen", André Flahaut wants to establish a military security service able to tap or capture every kind of communication channel (GSM, internet, satellite,...) in Belgium and outside, so an Echelon-like for the former SGR.

The Counsel of the State estimated that this law project projet may be uncompatible with the International Right, but the Minister hopes his project to pass during the next Ministers Counsel.

From my former experience in the Belgian Army, such a service cannot be created in the next months with the actual infrastructure and the reform of the army, implying the need of people able to create a modern network with enough skills. But this is another threath -with data retention procedures- to civil rights and innocence presemption.

Marco,
