Thousands of people participated in a peaceful rally through the streets of Brussels on Wednesday, calling for solidarity with Israel and an end to anti-Semitic attacks.

The protesters came from across Europe - including France, Italy ,Germany ,Roumania etc...

Police estimated that some 6,000 people from many European countries took part in the march, which was organized by the European Jewish Congress. Organisers put the figure at 15,000.

"We Jews who are living in Europe are proud of being Jews. We will never allow anti-Semitism to put us back in the ghettos," Michel Friedman, vice president of the European Jewish Congress, told the rally.

"We will never accept that anti-Semitism has a new name - anti-Zionism or anti-Israelism," he told the protesters, many of whom waved Israeli flags.

Europe has seen a spate of anti-Semitic attacks - ranging from anti-Jewish graffiti on synagogues and cemeteries to assaults on Jews and their property - since Israel launched a military offensive in the West Bank on March 29, following a wave of suicide bombings.

"Israel has the right to defend itself. If it has to use means other than negotiation then it must," said Arie Renous, president of Radio Judaica.

Friedman said: "If the Palestinians want their own country they have to deny terrorism forever."

Gathering in a square near the European Union's headquarters, speakers attacked the 15-nation bloc for what they called its pro-Palestinian bias. "Europe tolerates Jews being killed and asks Israel to refrain from reacting," said Rijk van Dam, a member of the European Parliament

"We ask Europe to stop its one-sided policy towards Israel. Both sides have to be represented in Europe's Middle East policy," Friedman added.

The late night VRT news mentioned two Israeli security services people where arrested during teh protest for carrying amunition.

I am saddened to see how much hate and intolerance is expressed when the racism-imperialism-zionism comes up.

I wish Indymedia could develop an "anti-hate" policy. All these insults : "imperialist!" "Nazi!" really don't help anyone.

The most heartening view on this subject which I have yet read is that of Starhawk. Hers is a whole lifetime of activism : a witch, ecofeminist, pacifist, anti-globalist avant la lettre... but also a 'heretic' Jew.

For me, someone who was brought up praying 'Next year in Jerusalem', yet who can see Israeli policy as being a denial of the humanity of Palestinians - and thus on a par with Nazism - deserves your attention.

Do you thing wars and crimes are about hatred?
No it's not. Considereing hatred as the source of those stuffs is hidding the real reasons.

Is "imperialist" an insult?
No, it's not. It's an ideology, and it's a fact.

Bu she is basicalluy saying the same thing.

She does not say : Stop the hatred.

She stronlt condemn zionism and even comperas it with with Fascisme, even if she doesn not like the comparisson (neither do I).

Try and explain to me how you could justify tollerance towards Nazism - Racism - Zionism - Imperialism.

Those ideologies being intollerant by definition, don't expect any tollerance from people who support them. Especially (but not exclusively) towards people with different idea's, looks, etc. ...

In order to develop a constructive discussion, both sides should be open to that. In this case, the "other" side is excluding dialog in the very core of its ideology.

Who is advocating hatred here?
