VS-vliegtuig krijgt de kogel in de Filippijnen

VS-militairen lopen een blauwtje en een paar kogels op bij een van hun eerste oefenvluchten. Het Nieuwe Volksleger zit er allicht voor iets tussen.

De "gezamenlijke oefeningen" (lees: militaire interventie) van het VS-leger met het Filippijns leger zijn nog maar net begonnen, of de VS lopen/vliegen al tegen de lamp. Op 31 januari kreeg een C-130 militair vliegtuig van de US Air Force een koppel kogels in zijn buik toen het een oefenvlucht maakte boven de provincie Abra, Noord-Luzon. Waarschijnlijk het werk van de guerrilla van het Nieuwe Volksleger (NPA). Deze voltreffer had als gevolg dat de paar honderd VS-militairen die op het eiland Luzon gestationeerd zijn tot nader order in de kazernes gehouden worden, uit veiligheidsmaatregelen.
Jose Maria Sison, hoofdadviseur van het Nationaal Democratisch Front (de koepel van revolutionaire organisaties waartoe het NPA behoort), had direct een spitse commentaar klaar: "Logisch toch, het vliegtuig was het NDF-luchtruim binnengedrongen." Eerder al had ook NPA-woordvoerder Gregorio Rosal, oftewel Ka Roger, gezegd: "Als VS-militairen NPA-gebied durven betreden, vrees ik dat mijn mannen niet zullen kunnen weerstaan aan de verleiding om ze op te pakken." Met andere woorden, als de VS in de Filippijnen een nieuw Vietnam willen, kunnen ze het krijgen: het Filippijnse volk en zijn volksleger zijn paraat.

Farao, dear! It is correct that the Balikatan exercises are held in Basilan, the lair of the Abu Sayyaf. This particular plane, however, took part in the Piston exercises that are held in Luzon. Both joint military "exercises" are part of the US intervention.

Anyway, why would the US waste its time with the Abu Sayyaf, a bunch of some one hundred gangsters they trained themselves and who are mainly operating in Basilan and Sulu, two tiny island provinces? The NPA operates nationwide and has, according to the military, more than 12,000 guerrillas.

It is crystal-clear that this intervention has an agenda that goes beyond the Abu Sayyaf. US domination of the Asia-Pacific Region for example -- with the Philippines as their launching pad. But that would also mean clearing the country of "unwanted elements" and be sure the NPA is one of them.
