Dit jaar zou het Wereld Sociaal Forum voor de laatste keer samen komen in Porto Alegre. Dat was tenminste de verwachting van wie het kon weten. Nadien zouden er eerder regionale fora worden georganiseerd. Maar ondetussen is dat niet meer zo zeker. De Porto Alegrianen hebben het blijkbaar goed te pakken en zouden bereid zijn om het Forum volgend jaar nog eens over te doen (de plaatselijke middenstand is daar zeker niet tegen). Wie klaar staat om de fakkel over te nemen dat zijn de Indiërs. WSF 2003 dus in Porto Alegre en WSF 2004 in India? We houden je op de hoogte!

>> DIT JAAR NOG EEN EUROPEES FORUM ?

Vandaag (donderdag 31 januari) kwamen de deelnemers aan het Forum Social Mundial samen in regionale bijeenkomsten. De European vulden de Theaterzaal van de PUC, de universiteit waar het hier allemaal doorgaat. Marc Maes, 11.11.11 studiedienst: ?eerst was er een voorstellingsronde per land. De Fransen zijn hier met 800, de Italianen met 1400. De Belgen komen op de derde plaats, met een hondertal deelnemers. Dan volgen een aantal landen met een dertigtal deelnemers, enz. In totaal zouden we hier met zo?n 3000 Europeanen zijn. Opvallend is toch het Latijnse overwicht van de Europese deelnemers, heel weinig Britten, of Nederlanders bijvoorbeeld. Oost-Europeanen kan je helemaal op één hand tellen: er was maar één Rus, bijvoorbeeld, en ook maar één Turk die eerst beleefd vroeg of we vonden dat Turkije een Europees land was. Waarop iedereen in koor ?Já? riep.

Het tweede gedeelte van de vergadering ging over het plan om het volgende Wereld Sociaal Forum voor te bereiden met een Europees Sociaal Forum. Zowel de Fransen als de Italianen stelden zich al meteen kandidaat om dit ESF te organiseren. Bernard Cassen van ATTAC France hield een pleidooi voor Parijs, de Italianen dachten voornamelijk aan Genua, waar ze vorig jaar al meer dan 100.000 mensen op de been brachten. Het is zeker dat ze dat dit jaar opnieuw zouden kunnen. Ze willen met zo?n grote bijeenkomst ook een duidelijk signaal geven aan Berlusconi. ?Maar voor we kiezen voor een plaats moeten we eerst kiezen voor een formule,? vonden de meeste aanwezigen, ?wat willen we, een massabijeenkomst of een forum met zoveel mogelijk afgevaardigden van zoveel mogelijk bewegingen uit zoveel mogelijk Europese landen?? Het voorstel om inspanningen te leveren om een brede Oost-Europese deelname te verzekeren vond grote bijval; en zoöok de idee om zeker de migrantenorganisaties en vluchtelingenorganisaties te betrekken en meteen ook organisaties uit de landen aan de overkant van de Middellandse Zee. Géén ?Fort Europa?-mentaliteit op dit forum, zoveel is zeker?

Aan het eind van de vergadering werd iedereen gevraagd om over de voorstellen nog eens goed na te denken. Tegen het einde van het Forum van Porto Alegre zouden dan al een aantal beslissingen kunnen vallen.

>> Will there be a Porto Alegre qfter all III next year?
This would be the last year that the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre. At least that was what many expected. Afterwards there would only be regional fora. But now that ain't so sure anymore. The people from Porto Alegre are on a roll, and are said to be prepared to organise the forum again next year(the local shopkeepers are definetely not against it). India is prepared to take over after that. WSF 203 in Porto Alegre and WSF 2004 in India? We'll keep you posted!

>>A European forum this year?
Today (thursday 31 of januari) the participants of the WSF gathered in regional meetings. The Europeans filled up the theatre of the PUC, the university where all this takes place. Marc Maes, 11.11.11 studyservice: "First there was an introduction round per counrty. The French are here with 800 people, the Italians with 1400. Belgium took the third place with about a 100 participants. then there were a lot of countries with about 30 participants, etc. In total there are about 3000 Europeans. Remarkable enough is the Latin majority of the European participants, very few Brittish  or Dutch people. you can count the number of  East-Europeans on the fingers of one hand: there was only 1 Russian for example and only 1 Turk, who at first politely asked if we considered Turkey a European country or not. We all yelled: 'YES'."

During the second part of the meeting we discussed the plan to prepare for the next WSF with a European Social Forum. The French and the Italians both offered to organise this. Bernard Cassen of ATTAC France argumented to choose Paris, the Italians primarily had Genua in mind, where they mobilised more then 100.000 people last year. It,s certain that they can do this again this year. They want such a big gathering to give Berlusconi a  clearly visible signal. "But before we choose a place we need to choose a formula," said most participants, "what do we want? A mass gathering or a forum with as many as possible representives of as many as possible movements from as many as possible European countries?" The proposal to make an effort to ensure a large Eastern-European participation was very popular, as well as the idea to get the migration-organisations and the refugee-organisations involved. "And while we're at it why not get organisations from the other side of the Medditerranian Sea involved. No 'Fortress  of Europe' mentality on this forum that's for sure...

At the end of the meeting everybody was asked to think about these proposals. By the end of the Forum of Porto Alegre there should already be a number of decisions.
