Dear Excellency,
Yesterday evening I have been informed by the Pakistan Trade Union Defence Campaign that comrade Hameed Khan, the leader of the strike of the Baluchistan Civil Secretariat Employees Association has been arrested.
At the same time we hear about the arrest of 100 other employees and trade unionist involved in that strike for better wages and conditions.
We also read that the President Musharraf has threatened the strikers that if they continued with their action they would be sacked immediately.
In the conditions of Baluchistan, where poverty is rife, this would mean immeditate poverty and destitution for those workers and their families.
We also fear for the physical integrity and the life of the trade unionists imprisoned and especiallu of Hameed Khan.
We therefore demand the immediate release of all arrested workers and the respect of all democratic and trade union rights in Pakistan.
We will inform as much trade unions, human right organsiations and progressive political parties as possible, in order to achieve our demands.
Sincerely yours,
