Jussi Hermaja, finnish conscientious objector seeks for an asylum in Belgium by bla Thursday October 04, 2001 at 11:50 AM |
Jussi Hermaja was sentenced to prison in July 2001 because of his antimilitaristic conviction. In the beginning of October - only few weeks before the sentence was executed - Hermaja defected to Belgium and started juridical process to seek for an asylum
The legislation of Belgium recognizes EU-citizens as possible asylum seekers. Human rights organization Amnesty International has defined finnish conscientious objectors as the prisoners of conscience. Amnesty International considers the excessive length of finnish alternative service (more than double the length of military service) as discriminatory and the form of punishment for persons who choose alternative service on the basis of their conscientiously-held beliefs. There is no national duty to do military service in Belgium.
