IHT on New York and Washington attacks
by William Pfaff (link to) Thursday September 13, 2001 at 05:45 PM

This is simply a reference to an interesting article I found on the International Herald Tribune, not something one often finds on this paper.

A very interesting comment by William Pfaff on the attacks in New York and Washington from "The International Herald Tribune", Tuesday September 12, 2001.

According to William Pfaff the attacks demonstrate that "high-technology defenses, of the kind in which the United States takes pride, can easily be circumvented, using simple methods" and "the final and most profound lesson of these events is one that will be hardest for government to accept - this government in particular. It is that the only real defense against external attack is serious, continuing and courageous effort to find political solutions for national and ideological conflicts that involve the United States".

Pfaff: Couragous Double-Standards
by L. King Saturday October 06, 2001 at 09:13 AM

Mr. Pfaff's explanations of terrorism's 'root causes' are no doubt thought by Mr. Pfaff to be couragous journalism. But this is the same "courage" which allows people to blame the victim of a rape, the day after the rape, for dressing improperly or trusting the wrong people. I question the moral virtue of trying to justify the massacre of civilians, which could be analogous to questioning Jewish behavior which "caused" them to be so hated by the Nazis.

Real courage would look at the obvious double standards between moderate US policies which repeatedly call for peace in the Mid East, while Arab regimes call for the "Destruction of Israel" and "Death to America". However examining these 'root causes' is seen as unworthy, since racial and religious hatred is more allowable if one is the Other.
