De gebeurtenissen in New York en Washington veranderen niet alleen de skyline van Manhattan maar ook het perspectief van waaruit we de dingen bekijken. Niet noodzakelijk omdat we dat zelf vinden, maar omdat anderen dat voor ons bepalen.

Hoewel er ook binnen de Verenigde Staten veel verschillende en tegenstrijdige meningen bestaan omtrent de vraag hoe op het onwaarschijnlijkste van alle onwaarschijnlijke scenario's moet gereageerd worden, tekent zich een specifieke lijn af. En die lijn loopt als een rode draad door de uitspraken van de President-Select George W. Bush, het Congress, de Senaat en inmiddels ook de NATO: RETALIATION.

Hoewel er nog niet de minste duidelijkheid bestaat omtrent de kunstenaars die op 11 september hun TV-productie op spectaculaire wijze - aangepast aan de spectaculaire maatschappij waarin we allemaal leven - aan de wereld vertoonden, horen we uit de mond van de leiders van de VS maar één woord: RETALIATION. En daar wordt aan toegevoegd: pro-actief potentiële terroristen uitschakelen. Zoals Israël dat in Aplestina doet. Zonder vorm van proces.

De Nato heeft inmiddels een communique de wereld ingestuurd (dat staat hieronder) waarin ze het vijfde artikel inroepen om alvast mee te doen aan de escalatie van de feitelijkheden die ons te wachten staat: ‘zelfverdediging'. Want de aanval op de symbolen van de in grote delen van de wereld terecht verachtte en gehaatte Verenigde Staten, zo zegt President-Select G. Bush II, is een aanval op de gehele geciviliseerde wereld. Alsof er ergens nog een andere wereld zou bestaan. En dus, zo suggereert hij, het is een aanval op ons en onze levenswijze. Op jou en mij dus. Maar daar ben ik het helemaal niet mee eens en ik wens dus ook niet dat er in mijn naam geretallieerd wordt. Als de VS zich naar aanleiding van het drama één vraag moeten stellen is die vraag niet in eerste instantie, "wie heeft dat gedaan", maar wel "wat hebben wij gedaan om dit te verdienen", waarom haten mensen ons land en de inwoners ervan zo erg dat ze bereid zijn zichzelf en een paar honderd andere mensen doorheen een flatgebouw recht in de geschiedenis en ons collectief geheugen te knallen.

En als ik dan even mijn mening mag zeggen, dan denk ik in willekeurige volgorde aan Nicaragua, El Salvador, het plan Colombia,Chiapas, Grenada, Panama, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Mumia Abu-Jamal, de Indianen, de atoombommen, de CIA, Henry Kissinger, Irak, Leonard Peltier, Wacko Texas, Joegoslavië, Libië, Palestina, het embargo tegen Cuba, Noriega, Oliver North, het Kyoto verdrag, de 2 miljoen Amerikanen in de gevangenis, de 40 miljoen Amerikanen die onder de armoedegrens leven, , de getruceerde verkiezingen vorig jaar, het IMF en de Wereldbank, de niet betaalde rekeningen aan de UNO, de Veiligheidsraad, de miljoenen Irakezen die sterven onder het embargo, de kinderen daar, al meer dan een miljoen die er sterven bij gratie van de VS, de anti-racisme conferentie in Durban, het neo-liberalisme en de globalisering van het kapitalisme, het plan Colombia, hun defensiebudget van 322 miljard dollar, en de palestijnen die met Amerikaanse wapens uit hun huizen worden verdreven en machteloos moeten toekijken hoe het Israëlisch leger ze platbuldozert.

Deze opsomming is niet exhaustief. Maar het zijn een paar elementen die maken dat ik met de Verenigde Staten niet vereenzelfigd wil worden. En als de NATO beslist om dat wel te doen, dan zal ik daartegen moeten protesteren.

Ik wil geen oorlog in mijn naam, ik wil geen bombardementen in mijn naam, ik wil geen geweld in mijn naam.

De vraag is dus of er iemand dat ook wil doen. Dat zijn we al met twee. Laat ons betogen voor gerechtigheid en vrede. Gerechtigheid voor de Palestijnse en Irakeese bevolking, voor de Colombianen en de Turken, voor de Vietnamezen en de Zapatisten, voor de Afrikanen en voor al wie vandaag onderdrukt of uitgebuit wordt door de machthebbers die in Washington en New York hun hoofdkwartier hebben opgeslagen. En gerechtigheid en vrede voor de wellicht duizenden onschuldige slachtoffers, hun familie en vrienden in en rond het World Trade Center.

Interessant: wist u dat Osmana bin Laden door de VS werd gefinancierd om de oorlog in Afghanistan tegen de Sovjet-Unie te bevechten? Een beetje zoals de Panamese generaal Noriega dus. En wist u ook dat de VS de Taliban volop steunt?

The sum will amount to 6.5 million dollars, as offcially reported by the information department of the Uzbek Embassy in the United States. The total volume of U.S. financial help to the Talibans-regime will amount to over 132 million dollars this year. Thus, the USA will become the world's biggest financial source for Afghanistan."

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) -- NATO has unanimously declared the hijack attacks on the U.S. to be an assault against all member states. Secretary-General George Robertson said the U.S. would receive support for military action from its 18 NATO partners if it is found the assaults were committed by foreign nationals. It is the first time in 52 years that the alliance has invoked Article V -- the NATO self-defence charter that says if one member state is under attack all other member nations would defend it. The decision opens the way for NATO military and logistic support to any U.S. retaliation.
In Washington, Secretary of State Colin Powell said the statement would allow a possible collective response once the U.S. has identified who was responsible for the attacks. Robertson said: "The country attacked has to make the decisions. It has to be the one that asks for help...The U.S. is still assessing the evidence available."
The secretary-general added: "The (NATO) Council agreed that if it is determined that this was an attack directed from abroad against the United States, it shall be regarded as an action covered by Article V of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack against one ally is an attack against them all." A NATO source said Robertson had called for the invoking Article Five for two reasons -- political solidarity with the U.S. and sending a message to terrorists that "we are prepared to face you collectively." The proposal spells out the requirement that if one of NATO's members is attacked, all its allies would defend it. Chapter Five says "an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack on all." It requires each ally to assist the country attacked "by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with other parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area." It is the first time that an attack has taken place on the soil of a NATO member during its 52 years of existence. NATO was not involved collectively in the 1991 Gulf War and has only ever taken joint military action in Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia under non-Article V mandates. NATO would require the U.S. to give it details of who had been responsible for the attack before any retaliatory action was offered. The U.S. would have to go back to NATO to ask for specific kinds of support, but officials say invoking Article Five would provide on an "expedited basis" use of air space by the allies and make other kinds of assistance available. Diplomats told Reuters it was a potent gesture of political support for Washington but it did not necessarily mean the allies would take collective military action. Any decision to launch joint strikes on the culprits, once they were identified, would require further NATO deliberation, as would a decision to place national forces under NATO command. European Union foreign ministers joined NATO's secretary-general in issuing a draft statement prepared for a unique session on Wednesday, which expressed "the most profound disgust at the terrorist attacks." Robertson said: "We stand together. We are two organisations with one voice, one strong voice, that we will not stand for this terrorism." EU Commission President Romano Prodi said: "In the darkest days of European history America stood close by us and today we stand close by America." Security had been visibly tightened at both EU and NATO headquarters in Brussels.
