Indonesia to acquire three more MPAs
By DARREN LAKE JDW Staff Reporter

Thales and Indonesian Aerospace (IAe), formerly IPTN, recently signed an agreement to supply the Indonesian Air Force with three maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). For the E50 million ($42.3 million) contract, Thales will supply and
integrate three of its Airborne MAritime Situation COntrol Systems (AMASCOS) and IAe will manufacture the three CN235-220 aircraft that will serve as the system's platform.
The AMASCOS design consists of the Thales Airborne Systems' Ocean Master search radar, an Electronic Support Measures suite, the Chlio thermal observation camera, and the Gemini navigation computer. Thales has already provided nine of the systems for the Indonesian Navy. IAe is part of the Airtech consortium with EADS' CASA unit that was set up to manufacture and market the CN-235 under a 50-50 design and production agreement. The -220 series version of the
aircraft has structural reinforcements to cater for higher operating weights and an increased range with maximum payload.
Indonesia has a total of nine CN-235s on order, with a further six required by the navy. The orders are in line with President Abdurrahman Wahid's objective of modernising and expanding the navy and air force to maintain better surveillance and protection of the country's vast maritime resources (Jane's Defence Weekly 31 January).
