World bank protests in barcelona; what happened after the police violence? by Joeri Monday July 02, 2001 at 10:43 AM |
Summary of what happened after the police-provocations and violence in barcelona on the 24th of June
"The samba band lead people off the square. It was quite tense as there were only a few hundred of us, being followed by swarms of police vans; but we left them behind by going down into the metro station. Every staircase and every landing was filled with people chanting, dancing and clapping to the samba music that echoed powerfully around the station. Security people looked bemused as we danced over the turnstiles packing every carriage on the train. It was very empowering. We got off near the jail and joined those already outside. Some people tried to get a little sleep while others went on noise-clapping, chanting and playing instruments."
On Sunday night and Monday, protests against police violence and against police provocations went on. By Monday night most prisoners were released; two are still in jail, up till now.
Media clearly has been manipulated on reporting about the protests. While there was proof, on videos and photos, of the police provoking; part of the media still only published about the protesters being violent. The Guardian even wrote about police provocations on their website Sunday night, and changed this into "violent protesters" in their Monday-paper.
On Monday, the counterconference organisation gave a press conference about the police provocations and violence, and showed video-footage. At this time, the organisation is still collecting more footage about the violence for a lawsuit against the Ministry.
