The Independent: Sharon government as a racist regime
4/18/2001

The British daily "The Independent" issued on Tuesday has compared the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and his government to the former racist regime in South Africa.

The paper added in an article for its correspondent in the Middle East Robert Fisk that Gaza sector has become like Johannesburg of South Africa when it used to be exposed to almost daily aggression because it was the center of the Black African Nationalists, who are the real owners of South Africa.

The report asked journalists who are reporting on this subject "What if we had supported the apartheid regime of South Africa against the majority black population? What if we had lauded the South African white leadership as 'hard-line warriors' rather than racists? What if we had explained the shooting of 56 black protesters at Sharpeville as an understandable 'security crackdown' by the South African police. And described black children shot by the police as an act of 'child sacrifice' by their parents? What if we had called upon the 'terrorist' ANC leadership to "control their own people".

The paper continued that there are no differences between the tactics of the former racist regime in South Africa and the current Israeli tactics in the Palestinian territories. The racist regime in South Africa used to have " death Squads," and Israel similarly has " death squads " which kill the Palestinian children every day. Rather, he added, Israel is worse because the racist regime in south Africa "did not use helicopter gunships" and missiles to kill the Blacks as Israel is doing against the Palestinians now.
