>toute la machine à fric qui est autour,... the good thing about living in a free democracy is that people can choose where they go and from who they buy, if the city parade becomes too expensive for what it offers, the people will go elsewhere. apparently there are over 100.000 kids that think the free parade with expensive drinks is worth spending daddy's and mommy's money on, and if you don't want to spend money there, you don't have to, and can bring your own drinks. There also were a lot of other parties organized in other cities, some free, some subsidized, some cheaper than the party on the city parade, some organized bus trips to the parade, with their own after party. They can't buy everything and everyone... >comme toutes cultures celles-ci ne doivent pas être utilisées à des fins commerciales... so what do you want ? all dj's and musicians on welfare ?, a state that decides what is culture and what isn't and supply the funding for it ? i'm a dj myself and it is sad to say that most innovative underground music styles have been brought to us by "commercial" club owners, who were desperate to try something new because their clubs weren't working and the banks were knocking on their door to cash their loans and debts, not by 40+ 50+ so called progressive artistic elements on the city councils and cultural committees, who are on average 30 years behind on what is underground or innovative in art, or are completely biased on one subgenre. In fact, the big majority of the cultural budgets for electronic music in belgium go to foreign dj's and artists, who have played somewhere else in the commercial circuit in belgium already, and thus it goes to artists for who there already exists a viable commercial market, so your taxes go directly to promote established foreign artists vs innovative belgian talent, and to subsidized events which take their ideas from the club and party circuit, and compete with them, cutting belgian artists and dj's on both sides. (p.s. i'm a foreign dj, but living in belgium) >les organisateurs de la city-parade aient en quelque sorte acheté tous droits d'événement ce jour-là If it's possible to exclusively buy a city for a day, then where does the real problem lie ? with the organisations and companies greedy enough to buy it, or with the institution which apparently has the power to sell your city ? If you're going to protest then define what it is your protesting against, and don't go insulting artists and dj's who are trying to earn an honest living (most paid to play on the cars, not made money) trying to pay their rent and bills by promoting their skills and their music, or the people who come to the parade to have some fun, they are wise enough to know what they like, and powerful enough to decide what they want from all those commercial sponsors and institutions, who are a step away from financial disaster with events like this, which for them are much too subcultural and fuzzy to ever dream of grasping. It is the wise judgement of people like the organizers of city parade, to keep the participation for dj's and artists as barrier free as possible, that makes that difference and make it a success. once again if you want the city of liege to decide and run the parade, i predict you will see 90% foreign artists and dj's, and names that were innovative when wearing bowl hats was in fashion, or like in Brussels you get the entire budget for electronic music to go to the one particular subgenre that the guy happens to like, the lionpart of which goes to foreign names btw, most of whom are also playing the party/festival scene. It is people who should decide what is art, what is quality, and what is innovative, not a band of music elitists who think they know what is best for everyone. If there is a role for the state it should be in offering at least a balance in the variety of choices, and at best a chance for new (and especially YOUNG!) talent to show itself, neither of which is the case anywhere in belgium. The city parade on the other hand is very open to everyone to participate, it is not that expensive to team up with some dj's and have a car on the parade, and many underground organizations had a car. People get a lot of different music and practically all genres were represented. If the sponsors were pushing the people music they think goes with their products i'd fully agree with you, but they are not, so i really don't see what there is to complain about, except the troubleing fact that the city of liege can apparently sell its streets and the right to party to someone, which means they can sell it to someone less open minded than the city parade organizers too... p.s. i too am convinced that if you talk to the organizers of city parade you can work something out for next year that fits your ideas and participate, since they are anti-nobody ;P.
