The International Day of Action against the NATO summit starts off with affinity actions throughout Prague. One in Letna was heavily policed.
14.15: people gathered at Namesti Miru, ready to march for peace. There are about 500 protestors, waiting for the speeches to begin.
15.15: having merged with a march which just arrived at Namesti Miru, the main demonstration sets off from the square. There are now 1,200 protestors. A cop helicopter is circling above, and whilst the police presence is very visible, they are dressed in normal street uniform. The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. Report
16.30: the demonstration is nearing the Congress Centre. Report For a while, a group of 200 split off from the demo to do street theatre rejecting the policies of NATO and the EU, now the demo is back in one mass, of about a thousand people.
18.15: the march, still numbering 1000, has moved on from the Congress Centre, where a noise demo was held. It is heading along the Vltava river towards the city centre. There are no reports of confrontations with the police, in fact the only problem so far has been with the photographers from the mainstream press (over 100!), who are intrusively photographing everyone. There was a moment of tension, now things have cooled down again.
19.00: the march has returned to Namesti Miru. The crowd is happy and noisy. Fireworks are being shot into the sky. The mood is good, everything is still progressing peacefully. Demonstrators are voicing their satisfaction with the way the event has turned out.

De grootste acties vinden plaats op woensdagavond en donderdagmiddag. [programma] Tot nu toe zijn de kleinere acties zonder problemen verlopen.

Woensdagavond was er een sjiek dineetje gepland in het centrum van de stad. Een tweehonderdtal anti-kapitalistische vredesactivisten voerden actie met een food not bombs en een solidariteitsactie met Argentinie. [NL | EN 1 2]

De Amerikanen zijn onder meer met 250 soldaten aanwezig. Samen met een twaalftal gevechtsvliegtuigen hebben zij in feite de militaire controle in Tsjechie overgenomen.

De CIA heeft in elk geval niet veel beters te doen dan de uitbaters van een internetcafe waar Indymedia mee samenwerkt, te intimideren. Een andere locatie waar gewerkt wordt door imc-ers, wordt ondertussen al enkele dagen in de gaten gehouden door reguliere politie. Minstens een Indymediamedewerker wordt al dagen gevolgd op alle locaties waar hij komt. In de lokale pers worden Indymedia-activisten ervan beschuldigd zelfs verantwoordelijk te zijn voor gewelddadige acties.

Twaalfduizend Tsjechische agenten moeten de activisten op afstand houden van het kasteel waar de conferentie plaats heeft. Een Tsjechische minister heeft laten weten nog harder op te willen optreden dan twee jaar geleden tijdens de protesten tegen de IMF en Wereldbank bijeenkomst.

Amnesty International heeft verzocht dat de Praagse politie de vrijheid van meningsuiting respecteert en martelpraktijken achterwege laat. "The Czech government must ensure that the sorts of human rights violations seen in Prague in September 2000 are not repeated."

De politie lijkt 2 strategieen te gebruiken, enerzijds een van paniek creeren, anderzijds geven ze signalen van alle protest hardhandig de kop te zullen indrukken (voorlopig nog vooral onder de vorm van hevige intimidatie).

Maandagavond heeft de politie een bar binnengevallen waar activisten waren verzameld voor een bijeenkomst. Iedereen werd doorzocht en gefilmd. Een persoon werd gearresteerd.

Ook het "convergence center", de algemene ontmoetingsplaats van activisten voor workshops, vergaderingen en het maken van spandoeken is na een dag al ontruimd.

Er zijn ook al honderden mensen aangehouden aan de grens. De politie schijnt een lijst te hebben van 2200 mensen die bij eerder toppen zijn aangehouden elders in Europa. Zij worden resoluut teruggestuurd. Ook als je politieke tekens draagt of anti-navo materiaal mee neemt, word je teruggestuurd.

Het advies aan de Praagse bevolking is: "If you don't have to be in or near the city center of Prague during the NATO summit, Nov. 21-22, then by all means, stay home, do your shopping before the summit starts and please, don't drive anywhere."

The NATO summit will be the largest convention ever to be held in Prague: 46 heads of state 2,500 delegates 3,000 journalists 12,000 people (KSN est.) will take part in extra-curricular events Czech budget: CZK 800 million CZK 340 million will be divided among about 100 suppliers 70 employees for summit preparations 500 cars and buses for transport (KSN est.) 3,000 NATO protesters (KSN est.) 12,000 police and military unit members for security (paid out of the budget's remaining CZK 460 million) Out of the total CZK 800 million budget that the foreign affairs ministry has allocated for the event, CZK 460 million are earmarked for security.

Security measures for NATO will include: Closing to cars and pedestrians of areas surrounding the Prague 4 Kongresove centrum, Prague Castle and Obecni dum 500 security cameras monitoring visitors and residents Tightening of borders and keeping out protesters with a history of violence 3,000 riot gear uniforms for police in case violence erupts Use of water cannons, tear gas and armoured vehicles to separate police from demonstrators, if needed.

The Prague Summit has been widely referred to as a meeting designed to take forward the further transformation of the Alliance with topics including: -new challenges and new threats; - operational capabilities; - the enlargement process; - partnership and cooperation, with sections on NATO and Russia, NATO and Ukraine, the NATO-EU strategic relationship, and the Mediterranean Dialogue; - and NATO's commitment to the Balkans.
