To mark the 60th Anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, For Mother Earth is organising a 250km peace walk from Ieper (first place that chemical weapons were used) to Kleine Brogel (secret nuclear weapon storage base).

The 250km Peace Walk from Ieper to Kleine Brogel began with a reception for walkers hosted by the city of Ieper. The deputy mayor began by explaining the links between Ieper and Hiroshima. Both saw the first use of weapons of mass destruction, both cities were destroyed by war. The city of Ieper has been playing a leading role in the "Mayors for Peace" campaign for nuclear disarmament.

Mr. Yoshio Sato, a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb told his very moving story. He survived the nuclear bomb, only to see the rest of his family killed by the effects of radiation.

The walk left from the city hall in Ieper, and passed through the Menen Gate, a memorial to British soldiers killed in the first world war.

The walk passed through Zonnebeke, where we were welcomed by the mayor, and Mr. Sato told more of his story.

The day ended with a reception at the town hall of Roeselare, where the deputy mayor shared a glass of local Rodenbach beer with Mr. Sato.
