Zijn de geëngageerde filmers terug? Op het filmmfestival van Cannes heeft Jonas Geirnaert, 21, de prijs van de jury gekregen voor zijn afstudeer-kortfilm Flatlife. In zijn dankwoord riep Geirnaert de Amerikanen op niet voor George Bush te stemmen.
"Utmost innocent and harmless actions in the daily
lives of four ordinary people. But of all the bad luck, these people had
to live next to each other". Zo luidt de synopsis van Flatlife. Geirnaert
stuurde een slechte video-copie met een haast onafgewerkte klankband naar
Cannes maar werd tot zijn grote verbazing toch voor het filmfestival geselecteerd.
"De jury zag een film met maar één minuut klank, ze zat de
resterende tien minuten naar een stomme film te kijken".
Terwijl Michael Moore met knikkende knieën en geheel onthutst zijn
Gouden Palm in ontvangst nam - de grote prijs in Cannes -, richtte Geirnaert
zich met zijn prijs in de hand tot eventuele Amerikaanse kijkers: "Ik hoop
dat jullie tegen Bush stemmen". Geirnaert studeert aan de Gentse kunstschool
KASK.

Jonas Geirnaert was born on July 28th 1982. After completing secondary school
in 1999, he started the animated film studies at the Hogeschool Gent - dep.
Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK).
In the 3d year of his studies, back in spring 2002, he made the politically
inspired short "The All-American Alphabet". This fierce criticism on the foreign
policy of the United States was very well received at numerous film festivals
in 10 different countries and won the prize for Best European Short Film
at the FIKE 2003 Film Festival in Évora, Portugal.
Apart from film student, Jonas is also improv comedy player with "The Lunatics"
and part of the Belgian comedy group "Neveneffecten", which in october 2003
won the Jury Prize at the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival in the Netherlands.
Jonas' graduation project "FLATLIFE" (2004) was hardly completed when it
was selected for Short Films in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2004.
