In Vancouver loopt momenteel een zeer interessant project van kunstenaar Irwin Oostindie over Noord-Korea onder de titel "Axis to Grind". Er is een tentoonstelling van foto's van Oostindie en screening van zeldzame films van en over Noord-Korea. Een film van Canadese cineasten over Noord-Korea 'The Game of Their Lives' werd ook opgenomen in het Vancouver Film Festival.

Oostindie verduidelijkt op zijn website het waarom van dit project: "Axis to Grind exposes the clash of cultures of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and North America. With the so-called hermit country branded a charter member of the axis of evil, by George Bush, it is crucial North Americans learn to understand north Korea. There are serious barriers to comprehending the historical and contemporary realities of the north, given the country's 50-year vilification by the West. This project hopes to contribute to people's understanding about life and politics in Korea, by making use of photography and film shot on both sides of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the DPRK and Republic of Korea (ROK)."

Oostindie schrijft: "Axis to Grind challenges the viewer to avoid the quick-reads and traps which are constantly reinforced by North America's media, Canadian and US alike. Our media references rarely take into account the unique complexities of DPRK domestic and foreign policies." Wat waar is voor Noord-Amerika, is spijtig genoeg ook waar voor de rest van de wereld. In het licht van de huidige desinformatiecampagne over Noord-Korea in mainstream en 'alternatieve' media zou het daarom interessant zijn om dit project ook naar ons land te halen.

Oostindie besluit zijn "artist's statement" naar aanleiding van 'Axis to Grind' als volgt: "The Korean people seek a peaceful transition to a reunified peninsula. Is the world ready? There remains a critical need to illuminate fresh ideas to assist ending Korea's isolation, to break North America's complicity with the ongoing conflict, and to bring forward hopes for Korea’s eventual reunification. As long as the US government promotes its axis of evil rhetoric, desperately needed resources are squandered on war-readiness, and the will of the Korean people remains thwarted."
