Brussel, 14 juni 2003 - Een internationale delegatie ontwapeningsexperten is morgen en overmorgen op bezoek in Brussel. Onder leiding van Canadees Senator Douglas Roche van het Middle Powers Initiative zijn morgen en overmorgen afspraken gepland in o.a. het parlement, op het NAVO hoofdkwartier en het Ministerie van Defensie en Buitenlandse Zaken.

Abolition 2000 Belgium nodigt NGO vertegenwoordigers en andere geïnteresserden uit voor een ontmoeting met de MPI experten op woensdagavond 15 oktober 2003 om 20u te Brussel in de lokalen van Pax Christi Internationaal, Oude Graanmarkt 21 (nabij de Beurs)

Senator Roche zal het vooral hebben over de tweesprong waar de wereld voor staat. Ofwel hebben internationale verdragen geen zin meer, en krijgen we een reeks unilaterale militaire optredens, ofwel gaan we de weg op van een universele nucleaire ontwapening. Hij zal beide alternatieven analyseren in het licht van de internationale veiligheid in het algemeen, en de veiligheid in Europa en België in het bijzonder.

Het is van belang dat we in België de druk op onze bewindslui weer opvoeren om hen tot een actief ontwapeningsbeleid te brengen.

De Middle Powers Initiative (MPI) is een coalitie van 8 internationale ontwapeningsorganisaties. Zij bezoeken verschillende Europese landen om de totale atoomontwapening weer hoger op de politieke agenda te krijgen. De delegatie wordt geleid door Douglas Roche, een Canadees senator, en voorzitter van de MPI. Verder maken Alyn Ware, coördinator van de Parliamentary Network for Nuclear Disarmament, uit Nieuw Zeeland en Aaron Tovish, van het NGO Committee on Disarmament en Mayors for Peace, uit Genève deel van de delegatie.

Er is ook een ontmoeting gepland met Kamerleden en Senatoren in het parlement. Het bezoek aan België wordt afgesloten met een ontvangst door Burgemeester Freddy Thielemans op het Stadhuis van Brussel.

Biographical Information

Senator Douglas Roche
Author, parliamentarian and diplomat, Douglas Roche was appointed to the Senate of Canada on September 17th, 1998. Previously, he was elected to the Canadian Parliament four times, serving from 1972 to 1984 and specializing in development and disarmament.

Senator Roche was Canada's Ambassador for Disarmament from 1984 to 1989. In 1988, he was elected Chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee. Senator Roche is the author of seventeen books, including “The Human Right to Peace” (Novalis, 2003). He is affiliated with numerous non-governmental organizations, including the Middle Powers Initiative and the Canadian Pugwash, both of which he is presently chairing. Senator Roche has received numerous awards and honors for his worldwide peace and disarmament work, among them the Papal Medal, the United Nations Association's Medal of Honor, and six Honorary Doctorates. He is a member of the Order of Canada and a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great at the Holy See.

Aaron Tovish

With over two decades of experience, Aaron Tovish is one of the world’s foremost disarmament activists. The Euro-American has worked for numerous non-governmental organizations, among them Parliamentarians for Global Action, Earth Action, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and the Middle Powers Initiative. Aaron Tovish made significant contributions to a number of successful disarmament campaigns, including the Six Nation Initiative for Peace and Disarmament, the indefinite extension of the NPT in 1995 and the adoption of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 1996. He currently serves as Director of the NPT Project of the NGO Committee for Disarmament in Geneva and as Geneva Representative of the Middle Powers Initiative.

Alyn Ware

New Zealander Alyn Ware is the international coordinator of the Parliamentary Network for Nuclear Disarmament (PNND), a global disarmament policy program for national legislators. He previously served as Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee on Nuclear Policy in New York, where he was instrumental in bringing a case to the International Court of Justice on the illegality of the use of nuclear weapons. More recently, Alyn Ware has helped launch numerous peace and disarmament education programs in various countries.

Mr. Ware has represented New Zealand at UNESCO and Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty conferences. He has co-written a number of books on peace education and nuclear disarmament, and serves on the international boards of several organizations, including the International Peace Bureau, Hague Appeal for Peace, Global Campaign for Peace Education, World Conference on Religion and Peace Disarmament Commission, Abolition 2000, International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms, and the Middle Powers Initiative.
