Persbericht en uitnodiging. In samenwerking met « Moveon.org » organiseren wereldwijd burgers een vredeswake. Ook Mortsel participeert in deze actie. Deze gaat door op zondag 16 maart 2003 om 19u00 op het Gemeenteplein (terminus trams 7 en 15) aan het herdenkings monument van het bombardement van 5 april 1943. De symboliek tussen dit monument en onze actie is niet ver te zoeken. Het verband tussen beide is terug te vinden in onze meest zwarte bladzijde uit de geschiedenis van Mortsel : het precisie bombardement en de bijna duizend burgerslachtoffers die hierbij de dood vonden. Wij voelen ons daardoor nauw betrokken met het gevaar van een nakende oorlog in Irak en dit met desastreuse gevolgen voor de burgerbevolking daar. Translation: In cooperation with "Moveon.org" a world wide civil vigil action is organized. Mortsel is participating too. Our vigil will happen on 16th of March 2003 at 7 pm at the Gemeenteplein (end stations of trams 7 and 15) at the location of the commemorate statue of the bombardment of 5th of April 1945. The symbolic connection between this monument and our action is very obvious. The relation between both is to be found at the most dark page of our local history: the precise bombardment that took almost thousand civilian's live. This creates a bond between the population of Mortsel and the threat of a upcoming war in Iraqi with disastrous implications for the civil population living there Breng allemaal jullie (veilige) kaarsen, evt muziek instrument, beste vrienden,buren en familie mee. De wake duurt ongeveer een uur (wie kan daar een exacte tijd op plaatsen). Zij is opgesplitst in 2 delen: een actief deel met inleiding en voordracht(en) en wordt afgesloten met een ingetogen gebed, geleid door Eerwaarde Deken M. Van Hoof. Achteraf kan iedereen die dat wil nog op eigen initiatief een glaasje drinken in een van de vele cafeetjes op en rond het Gemeenteplein. Bring all your (safe) candles, evt music instruments, best friends, neighbours and family with you. The vigil will take approximately an hour (who can put a time on it??). It will be split up in two main parts: an active part, with some speeches, ending with a serene prayer by our honourable priest M. Van Hoof. Afterwards every one can take the initiative to enjoy a glass and a conversation about the situation in one of the many little pubs on and around the Gemeenteplein. We (8 friends and family) are participating in this vigil because we'd like to peacefully protest against war. People are invited to come and join us in our garden. If you do, please bring some extra candles, your refreshments and an umbrella in case of bad weather. We plan on holding 3 minutes of silence in which everybody can reflect in his own manner on peace. Afterwards, people can stay for a chat or leave as they wish. Wij (8 vrienden en familie) nemen deel aan deze wake omdat we op een vredevolle manier willen protesteren tegen de oorlog. Those who don't yet believe spring is in the air, are invited to place candels in their windows. People north of Brussels showed solidarity in their protest against the concentration of flight corridors over their villages. Now it's time to show solidarity with the families in and around Bagdad. We don't want them to be overflown and killed by helicopters, bombers, fighters and rockets. We agree their regime should be kept under strong pressure, but when Irak fully co-operates, the deployed troops can honourably retreat. There's no need to fight.

It appears that the Bush administration will fail to win Security Council support for war, and world public opinion has been a key part of this. Help keep up the pressure by attending, or scheduling, a candlelight vigil on Sunday in your area. MoveOn.org and the Win Without War coalition, together with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many faith-based organizations, are calling for this global vigil -- and we need your help.

Beginning in New Zealand, this will be a rolling wave of candlelight gatherings that will quickly cross the globe. It's up to you to make this happen.
