Self immolation in Prague
by m Saturday March 08, 2003 at 01:39 PM

On March 6th, a nineteen year old boy set fire to himself on Wenceslas Square to show his disagreement with the world political situation.

The election of Klaus as president of the Czech Republic was a shock for me. The fact that he cooperates so well with the communists mocks the idea of democracy and all of us, his general acceptance by the public however doesn't surprise me, it just adds to the feeling of general futility. On March 6th, a nineteen year old boy set fire to himself on Wenceslas Square to show his disagreement with the world political situation. Will this cause a wave of protests just as Jan Palach's act in 1968? Or has the media brainwashed us to see not the political act but the 'wet stain' that remained after it, the wisdom of an old lady who walked by the scene of crime and said "this won't solve anything?" He didn't try to solve anything, but challenged us to finally start.
