Opponents to war in Iraq plan worldwide protest for January 18
MOSCOW. Jan 13 (Interfax) - Opponents to war in Iraq are planning a worldwide protest for January 18.
"A day of protest against the anticipated American intervention" will take place on January 18, member of the coordinating council of the international campaign against war in Iraq, Duma deputy Vladimir Volkov (communist faction) said Monday.
Public organizations of more than 20 countries, among them Egypt, Canada, Japan, Pakistan, Mexico, South Korea, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany and Austria, have confirmed their plan to take part in the protest, the parliament member said.
"The largest rallies and protests are expected in Washington and San Francisco. Several thousands of people may gather for a rally near the U.S. Congress building and then march on to the shipyard where warships are built for the U.S. Navy," he said.
Tens of thousands of Americans from more than 200 towns and 45 states are planning to take part in the protest, and a group of American television companies will provide free satellite coverage of the protest march in Washington.
The protest in Moscow will start on January 18 at noon near the American embassy, Volkov said.
