Palestinians top 9 million
Occupied Jerusalem: 10 November, 2002 (IAP News)
Palestinians at home and in the Diaspora have topped the 9-million figure, according to the new statistical book to be published next week by the General Bureau of Statistics in Ramallah.
According to the book, the number of Palestinians all over the world reached 9.1 million by the end of the year 2001 of whom 3.5 million live in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem and over a million across the green line ((in Israel proper).
This means that more than 4.5 million Palestinians still live in Palestine despite the systematic Israeli policy of expulsion and ethnic cleansing.
The remaining 4.6 million live in the Diaspora, many of them as refugees languishing in squalid refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
In Jordan alone the report says there are 2.6 million Palestinians, with Syria and Lebanon having 411,000 and 391,000 respectively.
The report pointed out that the average age in the West Bank and Gaza Strip was 70.4 for males and 73.6 for females, while the average annual per capita income was 2,152 US dollars.
