Police attacks the movement in Barcelona!!
by sergio on A-infos Tuesday April 30, 2002 at 06:51 PM

The police is right now trying to evict the social centre Can Masdeu, which had a key participation in the actions against the EU summit in Barcelona in March (at which over half a million people demonstrated).

RIght now there are 6 people hanging from the walls of can mas deu, 2 people with their necks tied to the wall 20 meters over the ground and 1 person hanging from a metal
platform. The cops are not letting anyone into the area and don't allow anyone to take pictures, not even journalists with official accreditations (and they have arrested a photographer without accreditation for taking them). The
people of the house have prepared a passive resistence so that if anyone touches the ropes, that could provoke the death of the people who are resisting.

Can Masdeu is an old convent that has been abandoned for half a century, for which the 'owners' have no project other than continuing to let it fall down, in which a grup of people are realising a social amd ecological project.
They do an important local work as social centre, and participate actively in local, regional and global campaigns and networks such as the Movement for Global Resistance of Catalunya (MRG), the network against climate change Rising Tide, the international campaign against gentech Resistance is Fertile and the network Peoples' Global Action (PGA). They have recovered with traditional
ecological agriculture two hectars of arable land that has been abandoned for 53 years, and the traditional watering system, fulfilling the declared objetive of the Park of Collserola (the lung of Barcelona, where the building is
located) which is to protect biodiversity and the traditional uses of land.

You can follow the eviction in http://barcelona.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18639 (look also the front page at http://barcelona.indymedia.org in case there are new items). More news soon.
