Op 9 oktober vroeg in de ochtend stapten 50 activisten uit de metro vlakbij de gebouwen van de International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Parijs. Daar zou die voormiddag een nieuwe lobby organisatie van het bedrijfsleven opgericht worden: de BASD. De BASD wil het bedrijfsleven een belangrijke rol toebedelen in het debat over duurzame ontwikkeling. Dat debat zal in alle hevigheid verdr gezet worden op de belangrijke Earth Summit (Rio+10) van de UN in Johannesburg.
Vooraleer de meeste genodigden van het bedrijfsleven en de VN de oprningszitting konden betreden, doken de activisten voor de ingang op. Dadelijk weerklonk er daverende samba muziek, enkele activisten glipten naar binnen, ketenden zich vast en spandoeken werden aan het ICC gebouw opgehangen. Verontrust door de onverwachte actie, besloten de verantwoordelijken de toeganspoort van binnenuit te sluiten. Daardoor konden de genodigden plots zelf niet meer naar binnen. Bijgevolg hadden ze voldoende tijd om de slogans van de activisten te lezen: stop privatisation UN en no greenwashing of corporations. Die laatste slogan slaat op de pogingen van het bedrijfsleven om zich een groen imago aan te meten hoewel hun ontwikkelingsvisie uitermate productivistisch en neo liberaal blijft.
Dat de actie indruk maakte, deels doordat ze totaal onverwacht was, blijkt uit de in der haast geschreven reactie van de BASD op de actie, die bol staat van de 'greenwashing' retoriek. (zie http://www.basd-action.net)
De actie zelf kwam er op initiatief van aseed europe (http://www.aseed.net) die het netwerk van samba groepen contacteerde en samenwerking zocht met o.a. Franse milieugroeperingen en de confédération Paysanne van José Bové. Uit België deden leden van de MWG van de Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie en Milieubescherming mee.
Dat de confédération paysanne -vooral bekend uit de democratische globaliseringsbeweging- het persbericht mee onderschreef is geen toeval. Verschillende actiegroepen uit de mondiale verzetsbeweging kiezen ervoor om de focus rechtstreeks op de armoedige ontwikkelingsvisie van het bedrijfsleven te leggen door middel van onverwachte directe acties. Zeker na de geweldadige confrontaties omheen topbijeenkomsten en de groeiende politie repressie.

No to the 'privatisation' of the UN.
No to the BASD greenwashing of industry

The first meeting of the Business Action for Sustainable Development (BASD) group, a joint initiative of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), will take place in Paris on the 9th and 10th October 2001. The creation of the BASD is the main business strategy in preparation for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+10, which will take place next year, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Civil Society organisations from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom will gather for the occasion to demonstrate against the plans of industrial lobby groups to use the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development, as a process to legitimise continued global deregulation in the name of sustainable development.

The creation of the BASD and its participation in the World Summit has not so much to do with achieving sustainability, as with retaining corporate power and legitimacy of their activities. Civil society groups and trade unions increasingly oppose the harmful role which transnational corporations' play in unevenly distributing our planet's resources and wealth. Therefore it is necessary to expose and denounce the corporate 'green' language which currently misinforms the public.

Given the social and environmental history of the majority of their members, the commitment of the BASD, ICC and WBCSD in regards to sustainability issues should be severely doubted. The industrial and commercial activities of these new "knights" of sustainable development often violate international environmental agreements and workers' rights. This hypocrisy by lobby groups and transnational corporations leads us to believe that the BASD is incapable of being truly committed to environmental and social change.

We the undersigned organisations are concerned that the BASD and its founders, will be using the World Summit and the preparation period leading up to it, as an opportunity to convince governments and the public that their path is the right one. Their underlying aim is to legitimise the continuance of corporate led globalisation, while simultaneously facilitating the appropriation of public and natural resources by transnational corporations and aiding the privatisation of our planet to the benefit of very few.
